Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – IMC Stepdown Unit

Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Unit Type: Intermediate Care (Stepdown/PCU)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit Details

  • 30-bed unit
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-6 depending on patient acuity
  • Common patient types: cardiac patients, post-pneumonia, post-cardiac cath lab, seizures, alcohol withdrawal (CIWA protocols), pacemakers, and more
  • Cardiac monitoring and management of cardiac drips required
  • Charge nurse coverage on all shifts; day shift charge usually does not take patient assignment unless necessary, night shift charge takes a lighter assignment
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT) assigned to unit 24/7, manages respiratory equipment (BiPAP, Airvo, trachs); nurses expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment as needed
  • Telemetry/Monitor Techs available 24/7; nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips, print strips, perform measurements, and identify rhythms

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of Stepdown/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing experience
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Must be comfortable titrating drips (e.g., Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Heparin, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Angiomax)
  • Valid, unexpired driver’s license required (must be submitted with application)
  • Disclosure of any licensing issues required at time of submission

Job Duties

  • Provide direct patient care including activities of daily living (ADLs), vital signs, bathing, toileting, feeding, repositioning, answering call lights, and blood sugar monitoring
  • Titrate and manage cardiac drips as ordered
  • Troubleshoot telemetry and respiratory equipment as needed

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • 4-week scheduling blocks with some self-scheduling flexibility; final schedule approval required
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Holiday rotation participation may be required
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Travelers are first to float and may be assigned to any inpatient unit
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs

Orientation

  • 2 days general orientation
  • 1 day preceptor-led orientation on the unit
  • Orientation includes 12-hour night shifts and weekend scheduling as assigned

This position is ideal for experienced Stepdown/PCU RNs comfortable with cardiac monitoring, drip titration, and telemetry interpretation, seeking a night shift role with a structured orientation and supportive team environment.
