Registered Nurse - Cath Lab

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work in Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiac Cath Labs
  • Procedures include: Cardiac Stent Placement, Diagnostic Catheterizations (Adult), IABP Placement/Removal, Interventional Catheterizations, Left and Right Heart Catheterization, Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI), Pulmonary Artery Line/Swan Ganz monitoring
  • Medications handled: Antiarrhythmics, Antihypertensives, Emergency Medications, IV vasopressors, Procedural Sedation Administration/Monitoring, Reversal agents, Thrombolytics
  • IV Therapy: Blood Product Administration, IV infusion pumps, Starting IVs
  • Professional skills: 12 Lead EKG, Activated Clotting Time (ACT), Cardioversion, Circulate Procedures, Infection Prevention, Dysrhythmia Interpretation/Management, Isolation Precautions, Malignant Hyperthermia Protocols, Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale, Sheath Removal and Monitoring

Preferred Skills (not required)

  • Procedures: ASD Closures, Cardiac Implant Closure Device, Impella insertion, Rotablader athrectomy, Transcatheter Aortic Valve implantation/Replacement (TAVI/TAVR)
  • Vascular Procedures: Angioplasty, dialysis graft interventional, Upper and Lower Extremity Angiography
  • IV Therapy: Assist with Central Line Insertion/management, Implanted Ports and PICC Lines care
  • Additional skills: End-Tidal CO2 monitoring, External Compression Devices, Hypothermia protocols, Laser Assisted Procedures, Pressure Ulcer Assessment/Prevention, Radiation and Laser Safety, Topical Hemostasis, Vascular Closure Systems, Ventilator Monitoring

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Shift: Monday to Friday, 5 days a week, 8 hours per day (06:45 - 15:15)
  • Occasional late days (4-5 per month), rarely past 17:00
  • Call: One day per week and every fifth weekend
  • Float: Required as needed
  • Patient Ratio: 1:1
  • No weekend shifts required

Patient Population & Diagnoses

  • Patients with cardiovascular diagnoses or symptoms including:
    • Coronary artery disease (stable angina, unstable angina/NSTEMI, STEMI)
    • Heart failure
    • Valvular disease
    • Congenital heart disease
    • Pulmonary hypertension
    • Pericardial disease
    • Pre-operative cardiovascular evaluation

Special Procedures & Equipment

  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) including balloon angioplasty and stent placement
  • PFO/ASD closure, Cardiogenic shock management, CTO
  • Equipment used: Impella, Penumbra, EKOS, Roto, Ultrasound, Shockwave, ACIST, GE Mac Lab system

Orientation & Training

  • Unit Orientation: 16 hours
  • Scrubs: Provided

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Cardiac Cath Lab nursing, with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Compliance & Background Checks

  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including:
    • Local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search
    • Education verification for highest degree specific to nursing profession
  • Drug screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam: Within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Immunizations and titers required or documentation of immunity for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer or series or facility-specific declination)
  • TB testing: Negative PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, clear chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physical with TB questionnaire signed by physician
  • Fit testing: N95 mask fit test within 1 year or completion of PAPR training (exceptions apply)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Medication Safety training and certificate of completion required

Testing & Competencies

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required within 72 hours of start; must score 82% or higher with up to 3 attempts and remediation if needed
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color Blind Testing within 1 year via online platform

Documentation & Facility Requirements

  • Employment application must be uploaded
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years for travel/per diem acute care nurses
  • Confidentiality agreement, education roster, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and other facility-specific documents must be completed and signed prior to start
  • Corporate ID and I-Learn account setup required within 72 hours of contract signing, including proof of login
  • Radiation badge required for Cath Lab staff; arranged by agency for travel nurses

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must provide a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation (specific instructions apply)
  • Candidates will float as needed within the facility
  • No weekend shifts required, but call coverage is mandatory as specified
  • Interview with manager required before offer
