Description

Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work on a 29-bed adult medical-surgical/oncology unit with patients battling cancer, including palliative care, family education, urology, and telemetry patients.
  • Shift: Night shift, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, 3 shifts per week (3x12-hour shifts).
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Patient Ratios: 4-5:1 (days), 5-6:1 (nights).
  • Float within scope to meet facility needs.
  • Open to accommodating blocked schedule requests.
  • 36 or 48-hour contract options available.
  • 100-mile radius rule for travel distance (75-99 miles requires facility approval).
  • 36 hours guaranteed per week.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in West Virginia
  • Oncology experience with a minimum of 2 years, including experience within the last year
  • Med Surg experience
  • Telemetry experience
  • BLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Valid driver’s license

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Flu vaccine required during flu season (October 1 - March 31) unless medically exempt with documentation.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is not required.
  • Negative TB test within 3 months of start or negative chest X-ray if positive TB history. Annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Tdap vaccination required (medical or religious exemptions accepted with approval).
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Hepatitis B immunization or titers required per facility policy.
  • Annual drug screen within 30 days of start, including a full panel of substances.
  • Annual fit mask testing required (N95 3M models accepted). PAPR accommodations available if fit test fails.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, stating good health and no limitations.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Background check: 7-year criminal history within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, sex offender search, national and international checks if applicable.
  • Required to complete facility-specific orientation (2 days) and inservice training modules (approx. 4 hours) prior to start.
  • Pass/fail testing required for EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration. Two attempts allowed per exam.
  • Annual stroke education CEUs required depending on unit assignment.
  • Must complete annual skills checklist for specialty.
  • Valid driver’s license and social security card required.
  • Primary source verification of RN license within 30 days of start.
  • Must review and acknowledge facility policies including dress code, blood administration, time and attendance, and vaccination exemption forms if applicable.

Additional Notes

  • Facility is a Level IV Trauma Center and major teaching hospital.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Scrub color for RNs: Royal Blue/White.
  • Free parking for travelers.
  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility.
  • Candidates refusing flu vaccine without approved medical exemption will not be considered.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable with oncology and telemetry skills, seeking a travel contract in a major acute care teaching hospital setting.
