Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Cardiac Telemetry
Location: Salisbury, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work on a fast-paced, busy cardiac and stroke unit with high patient turnover (78-90 patients per week).
- Primary care includes stable pre/post procedure cardiac patients (pacemaker implantation, ICDs, cardiac catheterization, PCI), stroke patients (CVA, TIA), and cardiac drips (Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone).
- Unit includes a COVID-positive side with patients on opti-flow and chronic BIPAP.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6; nurses must be comfortable managing up to 6 patients.
- Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15).
- Call requirement and float requirement apply.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend plus 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period.
- Self-scheduling with leadership oversight; no block scheduling allowed.
- Orientation: 36 hours, must be available every day during the first week.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of telemetry nursing experience, including telemetry experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Previous traveler nursing experience accepted
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Cardiac and stroke patients including:
- Stable pre/post pacemaker and ICD implantation
- Cardiac catheterization and peripheral vascular interventions (without sheaths)
- Unstable angina, low-risk chest pain, CHF, dysrhythmias
- New CVA and TIA patients
- Use of telemetry, pulse oximetry, and specialized cardiac drips.
- COVID-positive patients on opti-flow and chronic BIPAP during surges.
- No unstable oxygen patients on BIPAP or non-rebreather masks.
- Team lead available to assist with admissions and discharges.
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- 48 hours per week, night shift (4x12 hour shifts).
- Call and float requirements.
- Weekend coverage every other weekend plus additional weekdays.
- No block scheduling allowed.
- RTO (Request Time Off) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation.
Orientation & Uniform
- 36-hour orientation required, attendance every day during the first week.
- Scrubs: Navy blue or white scrubs or a mixture; jackets must match scrubs in material and color (no fleece). No crocs with holes allowed.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background check within 6 months required.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B.
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required.
- Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
- Completion of facility-specific education modules and compliance training.
- Must complete medication safety training and competency exams.
- Must complete Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start (minimum 82% score required).
- Must complete color blindness testing within 1 year.
- Must complete facility orientation and confidentiality agreements.
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract.
Equipment & Systems
- Use of Pyxis medication system, EPIC Dimensions documentation, and SBAR communication.
- Familiarity with telemetry monitoring and pulse oximetry.
- Ability to titrate cardiac drips safely.
Additional Notes
- This is a challenging unit requiring comfort with high patient acuity and turnover.
- COVID-positive patients are currently housed on the unit; appropriate precautions and experience are necessary.
- No block scheduling and strict RTO policies to ensure staffing stability.
This position is ideal for experienced cardiac telemetry nurses comfortable with a fast-paced environment and complex cardiac patient care, including those new to travel nursing.
