Registered Nurse (MedSurg & Pediatrics) - Iowa, Carroll

Job Details

  • Specialty: MedSurg & Pediatrics

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Days
  • Hours: 12-hour shifts (7 AM start), 36 hours per week
  • Schedule: 6-week cyclic schedule, with attempts to accommodate scheduling needs (no guaranteed block scheduling)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every third weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun), flexible to Sat/Sun/Mon if needed
  • Holiday Requirement: Yes, typically 1 major and 1 minor holiday depending on season and contract duration

Unit Information

  • Unit: MedSurg/Pediatrics (19 beds, can overflow to CCU)
  • Nurse:Patient Ratio: Goal 1:4, may be up to 1:6
  • Nurse Aide Support: Yes; goal 1:6 day shift, 1:8 night shift (varies by census and staffing)
  • Floating: Required to float to CCU or OB; cross-training opportunities available for Behavioral Health and ER upon request
  • Telemetry Monitoring: No dedicated monitor techs; CCU nurses monitor telemetry. RNs are encouraged (but not required) to train in telemetry interpretation. Phillips monitors used.
  • Charge Nurse: Oversees MedSurg/Peds and CCU; typically no patient caseload but may take assignments as needed

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Adults and Pediatrics
  • Common adult diagnoses: CHF, Pneumonia, COPD, Sepsis, Knee/Hip/Shoulder replacements, Colon and general surgeries
  • Common pediatric diagnosis: RSV

Required Certifications & Skills

  • Certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), PALS
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years MedSurg/Peds nursing experience
    • Minimum 1 year prior travel nursing experience required
  • Skills:
    • Ability to titrate Heparin drips
    • Familiarity with telemetry monitoring preferred but not mandatory

Orientation & Training

  • One 12-hour shift orientation specific to the unit
  • Opportunity to assist with quality projects and unit initiatives

Additional Information

  • Scrub colors allowed: Grey, Black, Pink, or White (scrubs provided)
  • Medication drawer keys are controlled; must be signed out and returned each shift to avoid replacement fees
  • Positive work culture emphasizing teamwork and professionalism
  • Breaks: Two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch per shift

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg/Peds RNs who have prior travel experience and are comfortable working in a flexible, team-oriented environment with varied patient acuity and occasional floating responsibilities.
