Description

Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45 – 7:15), 4 shifts per week (48 hours/week)
  • Patient ratio: 1:6-7 (must be comfortable with this ratio)
  • Float to similar units and alternate care locations including inpatient holding
  • Assigned every other weekend
  • Must participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team during catastrophic events or disasters
  • Unit orientation: 12 hours; Organizational education: 16 hours
  • Scrubs color: Navy

Required Skills & Experience

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last 5 years, including at least 1 year within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Proficient in colostomy care
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • PICC line management
  • Management of dysrhythmias
  • Oxygen protocol management
  • Management of traumatic brain injury

Preferred Skills & Certifications

  • ACLS certification
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Pre/Post hemodialysis management
  • Management of drips
  • Care for CVA, pre/post neurosurgery, spinal cord injuries

Required Certifications

  • Must complete facility-required certifications and competencies including:
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must score 82% or higher)
    • Medication/pharmacology competency exam
    • Color blindness testing (within 1 year)
    • Other certifications as applicable per unit requirements

Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license required for North Carolina

Patient Population & Diagnoses

  • Severe injuries to bones, joints, and soft tissue
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spine injuries and neurological trauma/nerve damage
  • Subdural hematoma

Systems & Documentation

  • Pyxis medication system
  • Epic electronic health record
  • SBAR communication tool

Important Notes & Requirements

  • No return to office (RTO) after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation
  • Must complete and submit all required background checks, education verifications, and health documents as per travel healthcare standards
  • Required health documents include:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year)
    • Immunizations or titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
    • Drug screening within 6 months of start
  • Must complete facility-specific education modules and compliance training prior to start
  • Photo for badge must be submitted immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire)
  • Must complete Novant Health Corp ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials to avoid start delays
  • Must review and sign confidentiality and hospital policy acknowledgment forms
  • Must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment with complex patient needs

Shift Details

  • Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each
  • Weekend work every other weekend required

This position is ideal for RNs with solid medical-surgical experience who are comfortable managing complex patients and working in a dynamic, crisis-response environment.
