Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Details

• Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (06:45 AM – 07:15 PM)
• Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio on days, nights, and weekends
• Average Daily Census: 21 patients
• Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
• Floating: Will float within scope to other MedSurg and similar units as needed
• Schedule: Cannot contract to block scheduling but typically can schedule 3 consecutive shifts; schedule requests discussed with manager
• Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
• On-Call: Not required
• Guaranteed Hours: Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay; cancellations beyond that will be billed

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
• Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Telemetry remote monitoring, use of Rapid Response Teams
• Cardiovascular: Post-angiogram, post-myocardial infarction care
• Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
• Gastrointestinal: Colostomy care, feeding tube management
• Genitourinary/Renal: Pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
• IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care, PICC line management, IV starts
• Medication: Heparin, insulin, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)
• Neurological/Psychiatric: Stroke (CVA), pre/post neurosurgery care
• Orthopedic Trauma: Preferred experience
• Surgical: Surgical drain care preferred
• Respiratory: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks
• Professional Knowledge: Isolation precautions, wound care/wound vac
• Additional Preferences: Previous charge nurse experience, Cerner electronic health record experience, Level I trauma experience

Required Documentation and Compliance

• Background Checks: Comprehensive background checks within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and federal exclusions
• Drug Screen: 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
• Health Requirements:

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming good physical and mental health and ability to perform job functions
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B
  • Annual flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required by November 30
• Competency Exam: Required for all clinical candidates
• References: Two professional references required
• Photo for Badge: Color photo required before start
• Orientation: Completion of computer-based learning modules before orientation day
• State-Specific Checks: Illinois Department of Corrections inmate search, Most Wanted search, and other state registry checks within 30 days of start
• Fingerprinting: Required in Illinois for clinical candidates without an IL license, must be completed in-state 3 business days prior to start
