Description

Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN - Urology/Nephrology)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM (3x12 hour shifts)
Unit: 25-bed Medical Surgical unit with an average daily census of 23 patients


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on a Medical Surgical unit specializing in Urology and Nephrology.
  • Float within scope to other Medical Surgical units as needed.
  • Work every other weekend.
  • May accommodate block scheduling but not guaranteed.
  • No on-call required.
  • Use Cerner for charting.
  • Scrub color: Any solid color.
  • Parking permit required but no cost.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Illinois.
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical/Surgical nursing experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Experience with pre/post hemodialysis management.
  • Skills in central line blood draws and PICC line management.
  • Respiratory care skills including chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC).
  • Experience using Rapid Response Teams.
  • Proficiency with Cerner electronic health record system.

Experience & Travel Requirements

  • Prior travel experience not required; first-time travelers accepted with solid Med/Surg background.
  • Ideally no more than 5 days of return-to-office (RTO) restrictions.

Work Environment & Facility Highlights

  • Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Magnet recognized facility.
  • Total staffed beds: 562.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, updated annually.
  • Primary source verifications for state license and certifications (BLS, ACLS/PALS if applicable).
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs scheduled/completed within 7 days of contract signing.
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30.
  • References: 2 professional references required for clinical travel candidates.
  • Badge photo required before start.
  • Completion of computer-based learning modules before orientation.
  • Various Illinois state-specific background and registry checks required within 30 days of start.

  • Locals accepted with no radius restrictions.
  • Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay obligation.
  • Candidates must be prepared to work within the scope of practice and float as needed.
  • Facility accommodates latex allergies.

This position is ideal for experienced Med/Surg RNs with skills in telemetry, renal/urology care, and advanced IV/medication management seeking a travel contract in an acute care, Magnet-recognized hospital setting.
