Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Med/Surg Post Surgical
Location: Medford, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: MedSurg Post Surgical
- Unit Size: 38 beds (4 semi-private)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (day and night shifts)
- Common Patient Types: Post-surgical general, urology, abdominal, amputations, trauma, ENT, bariatrics (travelers do not take bariatrics)
- Excluded Patient Types: Cardiac, orthopedic, neurological
Shift & Scheduling
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Night Shift Hours: 1845–0715
- Scheduling: No accommodations for traveler scheduling requests; travelers fill schedule gaps, no block scheduling
- Weekend Requirement: Variable, possibly every other weekend or more, flexible based on department needs
- Holiday Requirement: Possible rotation with core staff
- Call/Standby: May be placed on standby and called in anytime during shift if needed
Required Certifications & Licensure
- Valid RN license in Oregon
- BLS Certification required
- Non-Oregon licensed RNs may apply and be eligible for a 90-day temporary license if permanent license is not posted before assignment start
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing preferred
- Preferred Experience: Chest tubes, central lines, heparin drips, NG tubes, JP drains, wound vacs, dressing changes
- Drip Management: RNs required to titrate drips (common drips include titratable heparin, set rate amiodarone, and cardizem)
- Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitored by tele tech on separate unit; nurses should understand strip interpretation and lethal rhythms
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage; charge nurse does not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor and Critical Care Outreach RN available 24/7
- Nurse Aides: CNA ratio 1:7 (day), 1:11 (night)
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: No vents; CPAP used at night for maintenance
Orientation & Training
- Orientation: 12 hours non-billable orientation during first work week (2 shifts of 12 hours)
- Unit-specific orientation required
Additional Information
- Local Radius: Candidates must be outside a 50-mile radius; local candidates not accepted
- Floating: Travelers float first within skill set; may float to other med surg units, ICU as resource, ER for holds, or act as sitter
- Dress Code: Any colored professional scrubs allowed; no visible tattoos above shoulders; only nose stud facial piercing allowed; natural hair color required (no unnatural colors)
- Work Culture: Emphasis on hourly rounding, bedside report participation, and maintaining a positive attitude
