Registered Nurse (PCU/Peds) - Hastings, Nebraska
Job Details
- Specialty: PCU/Peds (Progressive Care Unit with Pediatrics; combo unit caring for both pediatric and adult patients)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour shifts, Days and Nights (7am-7pm)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours
- Weekend Requirement: Generally every 3rd weekend, with some flexibility needed
- Holiday Requirement: Every 3rd holiday, including one winter holiday
- Floating: Occasional floating to MedSurg with a full assignment
- Scheduling: No self-scheduling; block scheduling with traveler accommodations; travelers fill gaps in the schedule
- Call/Standby: No call or standby requirement unless voluntarily requested
Unit Information
- Unit Size: 27 beds (mostly private; 2 rooms can be double)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:3-5
- Patient Population: Mostly adults with occasional pediatric patients; pediatric RNs also available
- Common Diagnoses: CHF, respiratory failure, atrial fibrillation, diabetic ketoacidosis, GI bleeds, dementia, acute kidney injury, suicidal patients, pulmonary embolisms, pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19
- Equipment & Support: Shared nurse aides with ICU; respiratory therapists manage CPAP and BiPAP; telemetry techs present but RNs read their own cardiac strips
Required Skills & Experience
- Must have experience caring for both pediatric and adult patients
- Experience with chest tubes, arrhythmia identification, cardioversions, transesophageal echocardiograms (TEEs), post-heart catheterization care, defibrillator use, pain management, and PPE protocols
- Ability to titrate drips up and down (common drips include Cardizem, insulin, heparin, lasix, electrolytes, dobutamine, dopamine)
- Charge nurse duties include taking patient assignments
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Orientation
- Two days of nursing department orientation plus one shift on the floor
Dress Code
- Solid color scrubs only (no designs or prints)
- Natural hair color required
This position is ideal for RNs with PCU and pediatric experience who are comfortable managing a diverse patient population in a progressive care setting with a mix of adult and pediatric patients.
