Registered Nurse (Emergency Department) - Nevada
Location
- City: Winnemucca, NV
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Shift Details
- Nights
- 12-hour shifts
- Approximately 36 hours per week
- Schedule typically blocks of 6 on, 8 off
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 1-2 weekends per month
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday rotation; may be asked to work holidays
- No call or standby requirement
Unit and Patient Population
- Emergency Department with 8 beds
- Trauma Level: Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
- Stabilize and transfer STEMI and stroke patients
- No designated triage nurse; triage performed by any nurse using ESI triage model
- No separate holding area; holds intermixed within ED
- 2 designated safe rooms for psychiatric patients with 24/7 security rounding every 15 minutes
- Security is in-house 24/7 and rounds throughout the hospital
- Average patient volume: ~30 patients per day (~700 per month)
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity and census
- Patient population includes pediatrics (25%) and adults, with a large Hispanic demographic
Clinical Responsibilities
- Must have triage experience
- Comfortable with conscious sedation and managing critical drips including sedation (e.g., ketamine)
- Will float occasionally to Medical-Surgical/Telemetry to assist other nurses (typically do not take own patients there)
- Part of Rapid Response Team; may respond to in-house RRTs and Codes
- Responsible for lab draws upon IV starts; phlebotomy support available if needed
- Interpret telemetry independently; no monitor techs present
- Assist with respiratory equipment troubleshooting (NC, High Flow, CPAP, BiPAP, trachs, vents)
- Assist RT as needed with intubation, ABGs, respiratory treatments, and equipment management
- Accompany critical patients during transport for X-ray or CT scans; radiology located near ED
- Precept nursing, EMT, and paramedic students (usually assigned to permanent staff but travelers may assist)
Common Diagnoses and Patient Conditions
- Cardiac issues: arrhythmias, STEMIs, NSTEMIs, hypertension, CHF exacerbations
- Strokes and post-stroke care
- Trauma: motor vehicle accidents, falls
- Orthopedic cases
- GI issues
- Alcohol-related conditions and overdoses
- COPD and other respiratory conditions
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Nevada
- Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification
- Triage experience
- Comfort with conscious sedation
