Registered Nurse - CVICU (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 19:00 - 7:30)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) with a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1-2 (may vary when floated).
  • Patient population includes fresh heart surgery patients (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR), ventilated patients, chest tubes, lumbar drains, and patients with chronic and acute renal failure.
  • Floating required to all ICUs, PACU, Emergency Department (ED) for ICU holding patients, and Intermediate Care (IMC) units.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey.
  • Minimum 2 years of CVICU experience, with CVICU experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • IV Certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with post-op open heart recovery.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in New Jersey.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • IV Certification (required for all RNs except OR specialties).
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit specifics (e.g., Chemotherapy, PALS, NRP) but are not applicable for this CVICU role.

Schedule & Time Off

  • Every other weekend and holiday required as applicable.
  • All time off or schedule accommodations must be approved prior to offer.

Additional Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID and valid driver’s license required within 48 hours of signing.
  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches.
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine test).
  • Physical exam within the last 12 months confirming ability to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
  • Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit testing mandatory prior to start; must be updated annually.
  • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
  • Required to complete annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation materials prior to start.
  • Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam, dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam, IV therapy/infusion exam, and pass/fail testing (EKG/medication) within required timeframes.
  • Color blindness testing required if job tasks involve color discrimination.
  • References: Two references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history required.
  • New Jersey state-specific work history verification required for at least 1 year prior to start, allowing gaps of 30 days or less.

Patient Care & Equipment

  • Care for patients with fresh open heart surgeries and advanced cardiac support devices.
  • Use of Swan-Ganz catheters, Flotrack monitoring, temporary pacers, arterial lines, chest tubes, and CRRT machines.

Notes

  • First-time travelers are accepted.
  • Local candidates are also accepted.
  • Floating to other critical care and intermediate care units is required.
