Job Opportunity: CVICU Registered Nurse

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) with a patient ratio of 1:1-2 (may vary if floated).
  • Patient population includes fresh heart surgery patients (CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR), ventilated patients, chest tubes, lumbar drains, and patients with chronic and acute renal failure.
  • Floating required to all ICUs, PACU, Emergency Department (ED) for ICU holding patients, and Intermediate Care (IMC) units.
  • Experience with devices such as Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) using Prismax is mandatory, or experience with fresh heart cases.
  • Required skills include post-op open heart recovery, Swan-Ganz catheter, Flotrack, temporary pacers, arterial lines, and chest tubes.
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM).

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New Jersey.
  • CVICU (2 years of experience).
  • CVICU experience within the last year.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with advanced cardiac support devices, including Impella, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), or Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) using Prismax.
  • Experience with fresh heart surgical cases, including CABG, MVR, AVR, and TAVR.
  • Post-operative open heart recovery experience.
  • Experience with Swan catheters, Flotrack monitoring, temporary pacers, arterial lines, and chest tubes.

Additional Requirements & Policies

  • Holiday and weekend work required every other weekend and holiday as applicable. Time off requests must be approved prior to offer.
  • First-time travelers are accepted; locals are also accepted.
  • Floating policy must be acknowledged for every new assignment or site transfer.
  • Influenza vaccination is mandatory annually unless medically or religiously exempted; exempt individuals must wear masks during flu season.
  • Must complete Respiratory Safety questionnaire and clearance ($22 cost) prior to start.
  • Must complete facility-specific safety and compliance training including OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission annual training.
  • Must complete required competency exams and certifications within specified timeframes to maintain clearance.
  • Color vision testing required if job tasks involve color discrimination.
  • Must complete and sign elder abuse education attestation prior to start.

Patient Care Environment

  • Care for complex cardiovascular patients including fresh post-op open heart surgery cases.
  • Use of advanced cardiovascular support devices and monitoring equipment.
  • Work in a fast-paced critical care environment with a diverse patient mix.

Shift Details

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM
  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (36 hours/week)

This position is ideal for experienced CVICU RNs comfortable with advanced cardiac care, device management, and flexible floating across critical care units.
