Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse

Overview

Specialty: OB
Location: Ellsworth, Maine
Contract length: 13 weeks
Shift: 7P-7A, 12-hour nights
Hours per week: 36
Start: ASAP

Hospital beds: 64
Unit type: LDRP
Unit capacity: 4 Labor beds and 4 Postpartum beds
Nursery level: Level III Nursery
Delivery volume: About 200 births per year

Required Qualifications

Minimum specialty experience: 2 years
First-time traveler: Accepted only with at least 3 years of L&D experience
Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring
STABLE: Must complete within 30 days of start

Clinical Experience / Skills

Experience with all phases of Labor and Postpartum care
Experience caring for well babies
Shoulder dystocia
Epidural management
Nitrous as requested
Intrathecal spinal analgesia
Newborn care including vital signs, thermoregulation, hypoglycemia, bilirubin babies, and NAS babies
Comfortable with LDRP care, including Antepartum, Intrapartum, and Postpartum/Couplet care
Comfortable caring for babies in a rooming-in model
Will go into C-sections only to catch babies and provide neonatal care
Does not need to circulate C-sections
No infectious patients
No telemetry monitoring

Patient Population

Low-risk patients
High-risk labor and delivery patients are transferred out
Post-partum hemorrhage
Pre-eclampsia
HELLP
Bilirubin babies
NAS babies
Feeders/growers
Med/Surg overflow patients needing IV antibiotics, swing bed, or rehab

Support on the Unit

At least 2 nurses overnight, sometimes 3
HUC available 4 days per week
Midwife provides most care
OB available by call if needed
Charge nurse
Phlebotomy
RT 24/7
Hospitalist 24/7

Floating

May float to MS or ED for task-only support; no patient assignment

Scheduling

Every other weekend
Every other holiday
No call

General hospital orientation plus 1 shift on the unit
Scrubs: any professional color; procedural scrubs provided for OR only
