Registered Nurse
Overview
- Specialty: PCU
- Location: Kearney, Nebraska
- Shift: Nights
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours guaranteed
Required Qualifications
- Active RN experience in a unit setting: 2 years
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
- Must be competent in arterial lines
- Driver’s license required at submittal
Schedule
- Shift times: 6:30 PM–6:30 AM and 6:30 AM–6:30 PM
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during the contract
- Blocked scheduling is not approved unless it is weekends only
- RTO must be submitted upfront; no additional RTO will be approved after submission
Unit Details
- PCU with 40 beds and average daily census of 24
- Typical patient population includes adults with cardiac med/surg, dialysis, cancer, vascular, sepsis, respiratory, stroke, post-stent, post-pacer placement, and renal failure
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–5
- Charge nurse is present and takes an assignment
- Nursing assistants/patient care techs are present at a ratio of 1:12
- RNs are required to titrate drips
- Common drips include heparin, nitro, dopamine, Cardizem, amiodarone, and insulin
- RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips
- High-flow respiratory support is used on the unit
- Floating may be required to MedSurg or ICU to take PCU-acuity patients
Orientation and Work Environment
- Unit-specific orientation: 1 day
- Pass/fail orientation exam is required
- Navy blue scrubs
- Artificial nails are prohibited in patient care areas
- Overhead lifts, portable lifts, vein finders, and a bladder scanner are available
- The unit serves diverse cultural populations, primarily Hispanic and Somalian
- Strong communication, flexibility, adaptability, teamwork, and willingness to learn are emphasized
