ER RN

Location

  • Bryan, Texas

Contract

  • 13 weeks
  • 36 hours per week
  • 12-hour day shifts

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • TNCC
  • NIHSS
  • 2 or more years of ER experience
  • Experience in a facility with similar patient volume, trauma level, and size
  • Must pass an Advanced Dysrhythmia exam before signing the contract

Assignment Details

  • Travel ER RN assignment
  • May float between Bryan and College Station campuses
  • May float to help hands without an assignment
  • May be asked to precept
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Every other weekend
  • 1 major holiday rotation

Clinical Setting

  • ER/ED
  • Level III trauma center
  • Primary stroke center with comprehensive capabilities
  • About 135 patients per day
  • 30 beds with 2 trauma bays
  • Fast track area available
  • Separate triage area
  • ER holds are intermixed
  • No separate psych/seclusion rooms
  • Security in-house 24/7
  • RT assigned to the ER 24/7
  • X-ray and CT available in the ER
  • Phlebotomy available in the ER 24/7

Patient Care / Skills

  • General acute care ratio: 1:3-4
  • Level I trauma ratio: 1:1 or 2:1 depending on acuity
  • TNK ratio: 1:1 for the first hour
  • Vertical care ratio: 1:6-8
  • Common patient types include chest pain, nausea/vomiting, fever, pediatric URI symptoms, geriatric altered mental status, and trauma
  • Common procedures and treatments include chest tubes, rapid transfusions, and intubated patients

Unit Workflow

  • Charge nurse floats and takes an assignment if needed
  • Patient care techs support secretarial duties, tech work, sitter/mental health support, EKGs, wound care, transport, ADLs, and trauma setup
  • RNs monitor their own telemetry
  • RTs handle ABGs and share breathing treatments with RNs
  • Common drips include diltiazem, Cardene, nitro, propofol, fentanyl, and Levophed

Schedule / Orientation

  • Hybrid schedule with self-scheduling and block scheduling
  • 3 shifts of ER orientation

  • Navy scrubs
  • Navy undershirts
  • Navy scrub jackets optional
