Role Overview

• Med Surg Neuro - 4th Floor North
• 25-bed unit
• 12-hour shifts
• Day shift

Required Qualifications

• RN license
• BLS (AHA)
• NIHSS
• Driver’s license required at submittal
• Must pass an open-book exam during orientation with a score of 90% or higher
• No license or background hits

Preferred Qualifications

• Travel experience preferred

Clinical Details

• Unit cares for MedSurg/Tele patients, including strokes, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery procedures, and Med Surg overflow
• Common patient types include joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive
• RN titration includes heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
• PCA pumps are used
• Tele techs interpret rhythms; RNs should have some tele awareness
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5-6
• CNA/PCT support is 1:10-20
• Charge nurse is present on each shift and takes an assignment
• Floating may be required to other medical surgical areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for a MedSurg bed

Schedule

• Travelers will be scheduled
• Limited block scheduling may be approved
• Weekend requirement: at least every other weekend, with additional weekends possible based on unit needs and census
• Holiday requirement: 2-3 holidays from Thanksgiving to New Years

Orientation

• 2 days of unit-specific orientation

Additional Notes

• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments
• Mechanical lifts are in every other room
• The unit emphasizes hourly rounding and responsiveness
• Spanish, Karen, and Burmese-speaking patients are served on this unit
