The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering high-quality respiratory care and patient transport services in accordance with medical prescriptions and within the scope of licensure. This role involves evaluating patients, initiating treatment plans, and operating a variety of respiratory equipment with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

• Evaluate patients and recommend individualized respiratory treatment plans

• Explain treatment procedures and equipment to patients and provide discharge education

• Perform physician-ordered treatments including ventilator management (invasive and non-invasive), oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, and medication delivery

• Provide chest physiotherapy and various suctioning methods (nasal, oral, tracheal)

• Monitor patients using oximetry and capnography tools; interpret chest x-rays and basic EKGs

• Conduct pulmonary function tests (e.g., NIF, VC) and participate in bronchoscopies, trach care, and chest tube placement as needed

• Perform arterial blood gas sampling and analyze ventilation efficiency

• Provide tracheostomy care, including emergency and routine insertion/removal

• Operate and maintain ventilatory equipment; ensure readiness through daily testing

• Document treatment and patient response per hospital protocol and EMR guidelines

• Participate in interdisciplinary communication and shift-to-shift handoffs

• Adhere to lab testing policies for facilities with moderate complexity labs

• Perform CPR and participate in emergency airway management

Requirements:

• Active Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia (or eligibility for temporary/travel licensure)

• Minimum of 1 year experience in acute or LTAC settings preferred

• BLS and ACLS certification required

• Familiarity with ventilator systems, tracheostomy care, and respiratory diagnostics
