Unit Overview

• Unit Type: ICU/SCU (Universal Care Unit)
• Unit Launch Date: July 1, 2025
• Bed Count:

  • Starting with 4 beds
  • Expanding to 8 beds by August 2025
• Unit Description:

  • Universal Care Unit flexing between intermediate and critical care acuity
  • Initially seeking critical care-trained nurses due to high-acuity patient potential
  • Supported by tele-intensivist collaboration

Staffing & Patient Care

• Staffing Model:

  • Primarily agency travelers at go-live
  • Permanent staff hiring and onboarding to follow
  • Support staff (CNA, HUC, etc.) are core facility employees
• Patient Ratios:

  • Based on patient acuity
  • Standard ratio is 4:1
  • Nurses must be comfortable floating to units with different acuity levels
• Float Expectations:

  • Travelers should be prepared to float to Med/Tele units during low census periods

Orientation & Training

• Hybrid orientation model in development
• Shadowing opportunities on inpatient units
• Potential ICU/SCU orientation at a nearby medical center to gain familiarity with EMR, equipment (e.g., pumps), and workflows

Required Skills & Experience

• Confident in basic medical critical care management
• Familiar with common drips such as Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Levophed
• Comfortable working in a startup environment
• Adaptable and open to process improvement (familiarity with PDSA cycles preferred)
• Confident in autonomous care and collaborative practice
