RN Medical/Surgical - Inpatient Surgery Unit

Location: Cooperstown, New York
Employment Type: Long-Term Assignment (LTA)
Contract Length: 9 weeks

Unit Overview

• Unit Size: 46 beds
• Layout: Large unit with nurses' stations at front and back for effective communication and oversight

Patient Demographics

• Wide age and gender range
• Common patient conditions include:

  • General post-operative care
  • Frequent pain management
  • Chest tubes, NG tubes, Heparin drips
  • Dressing changes, JP drains, traction

Staffing and Support

• Nurse-to-patient ratio: Maximum 6:1
• Charge nurse oversees unit and may assist with patient care
• Nursing assistants provide support and may float to other areas as needed

Common Diagnoses Treated

• Post-operative care
• Urology
• Neurology
• Bariatric surgery
• Plastic surgery
• Orthopedic surgery
• Mixed acute medical patients

Procedures and Treatments

• Frequent pain medication administration
• IV medications and drips
• Wound vac management
• Total parenteral nutrition (TPN)
• Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
• Dressing changes
• Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)

Technology and Equipment

• MASIMO non-invasive monitoring
• Bedside monitoring systems
• EKG machines
• Bladder scanners
• EPIC for patient care documentation and management

Documentation Requirements

• Vital signs every 4 hours
• Intake and output every 8 hours
• Pain assessments
• Shift assessments
• Full admission assessment for new patients including 2 RN skin and belongings check

Work Environment

• Fast-paced with quick bed turnover
• Requires adaptability and efficient time management
• Frequent medication administration and varied treatment protocols
• Familiarity with unit technology and procedures is beneficial

Required Certifications and Credentials

• BLS (required for onboarding)
• Nursys license verification
• License/Certificate verification
• Bassett Core Competencies, Unit Exam, and Skills Checklist
• MMR, Fit Test, Hepatitis B, Influenza Vaccine, TB Test, Varicella, Physical/Health Statement
• Driver's License/State ID
• Annual TB Questionnaire
• Professional references, criminal background check, resume, webchecks, sex offender registries, education and employment verification
• Drug screen
• Completion of Bassett Security Credentials Acknowledgement Form and Confidentiality Agreement

This position is suitable for experienced medical/surgical RNs comfortable with a diverse patient population and multiple post-operative care needs in a busy inpatient surgery setting.
