Description

Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (ED)

Location: Utica, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Facility Overview

  • Brand new, state-of-the-art hospital facility close to downtown with various local amenities.
  • High patient volume in the ED; patient ratios may stretch to 1:5 or higher during surge periods (no guaranteed 1:4 ratio).
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work a shift on Christmas Eve/Day and New Year's Eve/Day.

Required Qualifications

  • New York RN license
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Emergency Department specialty
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) or ATCN certification (must have in hand)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Epic electronic health record experience (required)

Certifications & Training

  • ACLS and BLS certifications must be current; AHA preferred (ARC accepted initially but must update to AHA).
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) preferred for initial contract, AHA certification required for updates.
  • TNCC required for ER staff.
  • NIH Stroke Certification valid for 2 years.
  • New York Harassment Prevention Training (annual requirement).

Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 80% or meet/exceed Angoff score).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ICU, PCU, ER, CT ICU, and 7th Floor M/S Unit staff (expires every 3 years).
  • Color Blind Testing required prior to start.
  • Competency exams as applicable to profession.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start date.
  • Fit mask test within 1 year and updated annually (specific N95 masks required).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (PPD, Quantiferon Gold accepted; Tspot not accepted).
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
    • Varicella (titer, vaccine, or documented chickenpox history)
  • 9 Panel Drug Screen within 1 year of start (instant drug screen acceptable).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (Sept 1 - Mar 31).
  • Pneumonia vaccination or declination required.
  • COVID-19 vaccines preferred but not required.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID required.
  • Emergency contact form required prior to start.
  • Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and education verification.
  • References:
    • 2 professional references for travel, allied, or per diem acute care roles.
    • 1 professional reference for per diem non-acute care roles.
  • Facility-specific documents to be signed: job description, welcome packet, Omnicell form, and others as applicable.
  • Completion of online learning modules prior to first shift is mandatory.
  • Photo for badge must be a professional headshot (no head coverings, vehicles, or informal poses).

Additional Notes

  • Locals accepted at a local bill rate.
  • Patient ratios may increase during surge periods; flexibility is required.
  • All certifications and competencies must be current and verifiable.

This position is ideal for experienced Emergency Department RNs licensed in New York who are comfortable working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with evolving patient ratios and holiday shift requirements.
