Description
Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Facility: University Hospital (Magnet®-designated, Wisconsin’s #1 hospital)
Specialty: Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplant - CVICU / Acuity Adaptable Unit
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Work Schedule
- 12-hour shifts (Day: 0700-1930 and/or Night: 1900-0730)
- Every other weekend
- Some holidays
- No on-call required
Experience Requirements
- CVICU experience required
- Experience with NextStage CVVH machine required
- Experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery and/or Acuity Adaptable area preferred
- Minimum 2 years of acute care experience within the last 3 years
- Epic electronic health record experience required, preferably within the last 12 months
- Basic Arrhythmia experience required; must pass Telemetry test prior to start
Licensure & Certifications
- Wisconsin nursing license or compact license from permanent address state
- BLS & ACLS certifications must be American Heart Association (AHA) issued
- Telemetry test pass required before starting
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP)
Job Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality care to patients on an acuity adaptable unit specializing in cardiac and thoracic surgeries, heart/lung transplants, and medical devices
- Deliver care combining technological expertise with patient and family-centered commitment
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a specialized cardiothoracic surgery and transplant environment
Facility Requirements & Work Conditions
- Candidate’s permanent address must be within 50 miles of the primary work site
- Floating is expected; traveler may be assigned to multiple units or locations based on staffing needs
- Parking permit required if parking onsite; alternative transportation options available
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including SSN trace, nationwide, sex offender, and caregiver screening (WI-specific) within 90 days prior to start
- Drug screening required for clinical candidates
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- TB test or chest X-ray
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or titers, with medical/religious exemptions accepted
- Varicella vaccination or titer
- Hepatitis B vaccination or declination form
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (annual requirement)
- Other vaccines as applicable (e.g., Tdap, Meningococcal for certain departments)
- Facility-specific forms such as caregiver screening, BID form, and communicable disease forms
- Telemetry competency exams (Adult and Pediatric) required and must be passed prior to or during orientation
- Medication/pharmacology competency exams as applicable
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment and pass/fail testing acknowledgment required

- Facility is a teaching institution and referral center with a strong reputation for quality care
- Emphasis on continuous competency testing and compliance with facility-specific credentialing and training requirements
- Candidates must be prepared for a dynamic work environment with potential floating to different units
