Registered Nurse (RN) - PCU/MS Float

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float position covering Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units. Must be comfortable working all PCU and MS units.
  • Floating may occur 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours), including possible float to Inpatient Rehab.
  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM). Option for 4x12 shifts by request.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
  • Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
  • Charting system: EPIC experience required.
  • Accepts first-time travelers and local candidates within radius rules.
  • Pending license accepted if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia or Compact RN/LPN license required.
  • Time off requests must be submitted with application; Christmas time off requests cannot be approved.
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Required Clinical Skills

  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
  • Central line care, tracheostomy management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, chest tubes)
  • Cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, titrating cardiac drips
  • Emergency response participation (Rapid Response/Code teams)
  • Management of PCA and heparin protocols, IV insulin administration, endocrine/metabolic condition care
  • Experience with telemetry and stepdown-level care (PCU/DOU/IMC) including cardiovascular care pre/post cardiac catheterization

  • PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: 5:1
  • MS nurse-to-patient ratio: 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)

Important Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • I9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing; must meet radius criteria
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Background check: 7-year history within 1 year of start, including all locations lived/worked
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required
  • State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or titers required for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required

Additional Notes

  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • Photo for badge required (professional quality, plain background)
  • Facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements must be completed timely
  • No Christmas time off approvals
  • Radiation badges for new candidates are not provided; existing badge holders grandfathered

This position is ideal for RNs with strong PCU/MS experience who are flexible with floating and weekend/holiday shifts, and who meet the required certifications and clinical competencies.
