Registered Nurse (RN) - MS Float Pool

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Position/Specialty: MS Float Pool RN
  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 AM - 7:30 PM), 36 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Holiday Rotation: Required
  • On Call: Not required
  • Float Assignments: Med Surg floors at Main hospital and Ashley River tower
  • Patient Ratios: May vary depending on unit assigned
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Licensure Required: South Carolina RN License or Multi-State/Compact RN License
  • Certifications Required: Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Block Schedule: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis

Required Credentials & Documentation

Licensure & Certifications

  • RN License: South Carolina or Compact State RN license required; primary source verification needed
  • BLS: Required for all clinical staff (AHA or ARC accepted)
  • ACLS: Required for certain units (Adult Critical Care, Labor & Delivery, Cath Lab, ER, ICU, etc.)
  • PALS: Required for Pediatric units except Pediatric OR
  • TNCC: Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
  • Other Certifications: May include Chemotherapy, NRP, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification, and others depending on unit
  • IV Certification: Required for select LPNs if applicable
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs & LPNs/LVNs

Background Checks & Verifications

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • State-specific searches (e.g., South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers)
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start; annual TB questionnaire required
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation modules (approx. 2-6 hours depending on location) prior to start
  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge (frontal view, solid light background, business casual attire)
  • Upload vaccination records (COVID, flu) into facility system
  • Radiation badge required for certain specialties (e.g., CVOR, Cath Lab, Radiation Oncology)
  • Sterile Processing Techs have additional physical and lab requirements

Additional Notes

  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Return-to-Office (RTO) restrictions apply for travelers with more than 7 days off including holidays
  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency assignments during hurricane season (June-November)
  • Block scheduling is possible but requires manager approval and depends on unit needs

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, teaching, and Magnet-recognized hospital with a supportive float pool environment. Candidates must meet all licensure, certification, health, and background requirements prior to start.
