Registered Nurse (MS Float Pool RN) - Charleston, South Carolina

Job Details

  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM - 7:30 AM), totaling 36 hours/week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Holiday Rotation: Required
  • On Call: Not required
  • Float Assignments: Med Surg floors at Main hospital and Ashley River tower
  • Patient Ratios: May vary depending on unit assigned
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • License Required: South Carolina RN License or Multi-State/Compact RN License
  • Certifications Required: Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Block Schedule: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks

Required Credentials & Documentation

Licensure & Certifications

  • RN License: South Carolina or Compact State RN License (Primary Source Verification required)
  • BLS: American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) certification required for all clinical staff
  • ACLS: Required for certain units (Adult Critical Care, Labor & Delivery, Cath Lab, ER, ICU, Interventional Radiology, PACU, PCU, PreOp, Observation Unit)
  • PALS: Required for all Pediatric units except Pediatric OR; preferred for Pediatric OR
  • NRP: Required (AHA/AAP only)
  • TNCC: Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
  • CHEMO: Required only for Oncology Hospital Unit (specific unit)
  • EFM: AWHONN or NCC certification acceptable
  • IV Therapy Certification: Required for select LPNs (if applicable)
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for ER and as applicable
  • Tech Certifications: Required for allied health professionals as applicable (e.g., Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists, Ultrasound Techs)

Background Checks & Verifications

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification (diploma or transcripts as placeholder if needed)
  • State-specific searches including South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers
  • NURSYS verification for RNs and LPNs/LVNs
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or appropriate follow-up for positives
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
  • Drug Screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Seasonal Vaccinations:
    • Flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30)
    • COVID-19 vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated

Competency & Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam as applicable
  • Color Blind Testing required prior to start
  • Competency Exam required (including OR competency if applicable)

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Orientation: Completion of First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay modules prior to start; estimated 2-6 hours depending on location
  • Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses
  • Radiation Badge: Required for specific units (e.g., CVOR, Cath Lab, Radiation Oncology); not required for MRI, Mammography, Pediatric Echo, or Ultrasound Techs
  • Physical Assessment for Sterile Processors: Required for Sterile Processing Techs, completed by licensed provider within 1 year of start
  • Respiratory Safety Clearance: Fit testing required; PAPR not provided by facility, travelers must provide their own if needed

Additional Notes

  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency assignments during hurricane season (June-November)
  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval
  • Locals may be considered at a reduced rate on a case-by-case basis

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with a teaching and Magnet-recognized hospital system, providing diverse float assignments across medical-surgical units during night shifts.
