Registered Nurse - Surgical Services (OR)
Location: South Bend, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Surgical Services - Operating Room (OR)
- Shift: 4x10 hour day shifts (06:00 - 16:30)
- Call Requirements:
- 2-3 overnight shifts per week
- Every 3rd weekend on call
- Holiday rotation
- Weekend Requirement: Weekend call rotation
- Patient Ratios:
- Maximum one patient per case
- Open heart (CVOR) cases typically have 2 circulating RNs plus 2 scrub team members (CST or RN)
- Other surgeries may have 1 RN and 1-3 scrub personnel (RN, CST, RNFA, NP, PA, etc.)
- Traditional inpatient RN-to-patient ratios do not apply in surgery
Experience & Qualifications
- Required Experience: Minimum 2 years
- First-time Travelers: Accepted
- Certifications Required:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BCLS (Basic Life Support)
- License:
- Pending licenses accepted if active by start date
- Floating:
- CVOR candidates may float to main OR if no heart cases available
- Possible floating within scope to meet facility needs
- Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live outside 50 miles radius)
- Open Heart & Scrub Experience: Required
- Cerner Charting Experience: Required
- Self-Rating: Must rate themselves 3 or higher on cardiovascular cases

Additional Requirements & Notes
- Background Check: Required within 90 days of start, covering last 7 years and all states lived/worked in
- Education Verification: Diploma or transcript required
- Physical Exam: Required
- TB Testing: Negative 2-step PPD or Qgold within 1 year; T-Spots not accepted
- Immunizations:
- Rubeola (Measles) - titer or 2 vaccines
- Mumps - titer or 2 vaccines
- Rubella - titer or 2 vaccines
- Hepatitis B - titer, series, or declination
- Varicella - titer or 2 vaccines
- Drug Testing: Negative 12-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant accepted if needed for quick start)
- Flu Vaccination: Required or approved medical/religious declination prior to start; documentation must be on file by 12/15 for working candidates
- On-Call: Yes, depends on contract
- Block Scheduling: May be accommodated depending on contract
- COVID-19: Medical and religious exemptions available with proper documentation
- Facility Specific Documents: Confidentiality agreement, photo for badge, agency resource guide, and completion of required modules prior to start (modules take 8-10 hours)
Summary
This is a travel contract RN position in the OR with a focus on cardiovascular and open heart surgery cases. Candidates must have at least 2 years of experience, ACLS and BCLS certifications, and be comfortable with Cerner charting and floating between CVOR and main OR as needed. The role requires weekend and holiday call coverage with a 4x10 day shift schedule. The facility is a Level II Trauma Center with 449 beds and offers free parking in lots. Strict background checks, immunizations, and drug screening are required prior to start.
