Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Facility: University of Virginia Medical Center


Job Details

  • Hours: 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Holiday Schedule: Every other holiday; Christmas RTO not approved
  • License: Can submit application with Virginia license pending
  • Experience Required:
    • Minimum 2 years nursing experience
    • At least 1 year level 1 experience OR 2 years level 2 experience
    • Some pediatric experience required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – can submit with TNCC pending but must have before start

Time Off

  • Maximum 40 hours approved for time off

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM check within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • HHS/OIG check within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • Education verification through a 3rd party vendor (official transcripts required)
  • Fingerprinting may be required depending on unit (facility will notify)
  • Abuse Registry Search required only for Behavioral Health and Unit 5 East candidates

Health & Immunization

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (no declinations/exemptions)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
  • Rubeola (Measles): 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no declinations/exemptions)
  • Mumps: 2 vaccines or positive titer required (declination accepted but not clearance-blocking)
  • Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required (declination accepted but not clearance-blocking)
  • Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required or negative Surface and Antigen titers (no declinations/exemptions)
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required (declination accepted but not clearance-blocking)
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl, within 2 months of start and updated annually
  • Seasonal Flu vaccination required annually (no exemptions/declinations)

Facility Specific Documents

  • Professional appearance guidelines acknowledgment
  • Release authorization form
  • TB screening form
  • Traveler compliance acknowledgment
  • Fit testing acknowledgment (if patient-facing role)
  • Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable

Additional Requirements

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN and Mother-Baby units (not required for Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, Oncology, etc.)

Notes

  • CPI certification required for Behavioral Health nurses
  • Chemotherapy certification required for Oncology/Infusion RNs (ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure (NRP) and Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certifications may be required depending on unit
  • NIH Stroke Certification required for some units
  • Internal and performance evaluations required if previously worked with the system over 1 year

This position requires a strong clinical background with pediatric experience, multiple certifications, and compliance with extensive health and background screening protocols. Night shifts and holiday scheduling are specified, with a 13-week contract length.
