Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Smithfield, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Description

• 32-bed medical/surgical/telemetry unit on the 3rd floor
• Patient population includes orthopedic and general surgery patients
• Unit divided into two sides: South (17 beds) and North (15 beds)
• 6 additional overflow beds located on the 2nd floor for census increases

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support): Current certification required; online CPR not accepted
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for certain specialties; check unit description for applicability
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Check unit description if applicable
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Check unit description if applicable
• EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring): Check unit description if applicable
• NIH Stroke Certification: Required for all inpatient RNs except OR and PICC; must be updated annually
• Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: Required
• Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication): Facility-administered computer-based learning during orientation

• Background Check: 7-year criminal history check within one year of start, updated annually; includes SS trace, counties, statewide, nationwide, sex offender checks
• Fingerprinting: Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check results required starting 7/15/2025 (for tracking only)
• Photo for Badge: Recent, professional headshot meeting facility specifications
• Confidentiality Agreement
• Facility Policies: Scrub colors, safety brochure, dress code, drug-free policy, hand washing hygiene policy acknowledgment
• TB Screening: Annual TB questionnaire and proof of negative TB test or chest X-ray; clearance letter required if positive
• Physical Exam: Physician statement within last 12 months
• Vaccinations:

  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; exemptions require approval
  • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or declination
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines, titer, or history of chickenpox; exemptions require approval
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (10/1-3/31); exemptions accepted with approval
  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Initial series preferred
• Drug Testing: Within last 12 months; specific panels required
• References: Two professional references required

• Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually

Competency Requirements

• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (as applicable)
• Competency Exam (as applicable)
• Core Parts I, II, and III (or signed HIPAA form for subcontractors)

Additional Notes

• Candidates must be at least 21 years old; 25 if transporting patients
• Minimum 3 years driving experience required if driving is part of the role
• Facility provides multiple attempts for orientation computer-based learning tests
• Stroke education CEUs required annually, hours vary by unit (Med Surg requires 1 hour)
