Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU Medical/Pulmonary with Renal Overflow

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Medical/Pulmonary with Renal overflow
  • Patient Population: Adult and geriatric patients on Hospitalist service with pulmonary and other medicine-related conditions; renal overflow
  • Ventilator Care: Chronic ventilated patients (not ICU level) with up to two ventilated patients accommodated
  • Ratios: 1:5
  • Floating: Required within skillset
  • Remote telemetry and tele-sitting technology used for patient monitoring and redeployment of Patient Care Techs

Schedule

  • Shifts: 3x12 hour shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • No Christmas time off requests allowed
  • Accepts first-time travelers and local candidates within radius rule
  • Pending license accepted only if single-state non-compact license; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (AHA only)
  • BLS (AHA only)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring: interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Administration of cardiac drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low dose dopamine and dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix (no titration)
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
  • Ventilator care for chronic vented patients (non-ICU level)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Participation in Rapid Response and Code teams
  • Isolation precautions

Documentation and Compliance Requirements

  • I9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing; must meet radius requirements
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Background check: 7-year history, including all locations lived/worked in past 7 years; updated if 30+ day break in assignments
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and for renewals
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification for RNs within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Flu vaccination or declination form required during flu season
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Photo for badge required (professional, plain background)
  • Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start

Additional Notes

  • EPIC charting experience required
  • No Christmas time off allowed
  • Candidates must review and acknowledge orientation and safety manuals as applicable
  • Facility is Magnet-designated, Level I Trauma Center, and a primary teaching hospital with nationally ranked cardiac care

This position is suitable for RNs with experience in progressive care, pulmonary, renal overflow, and chronic ventilator management who are comfortable working night shifts and meeting the specified certification and documentation requirements.
