Job Description

  • Position: NICU Registered Nurse
  • Shifts: Rotating shifts
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years NICU experience required
  • Travel Experience: Must have prior travel nursing experience
  • Electronic Medical Record: Epic experience required (no exceptions)
  • Certifications: BLS and NRP required
  • Locals allowed at same rate

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – AHA only
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – as applicable
  • State License: Permanent Virginia RN license required (no temporary licenses accepted)
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: HIPAA compliance required

Experience & Competencies

  • Minimum 2 years NICU nursing experience
  • Must have prior travel nursing experience
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required (as applicable)
  • Color Blind Testing required
  • Abuse Reporting Competency required (covering physical/sexual abuse, domestic violence, neglect/exploitation of elderly or incapacitated adults)

Background & Screening Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including:
    • All states lived/worked in past 7 years
    • State of permanent residence
    • VA Statewide Repository Search
    • Social Security Trace
    • All counties lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Nationwide check
    • FACIS Level 3
    • Sex Offender Registry
    • Education Verification
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM check within 30 days of start
  • HHS/OIG check within 30 days of start
  • Fingerprinting: Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check fingerprint results required for NICU units (results can pend but proof of submission must be on file)
  • Education Verification: Degree from an accredited nursing program (NLN or CCNE) required
  • References: 2 professional references required
  • Employment Application/Resume: Complete application required

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine required (declination accepted with handwritten signature)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (Q-gold/T-spot within 30 days of start OR two PPDs with one within 30 days of start)
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers required; booster required if low titer
  • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
  • Drug testing within 60 days of start (9-panel minimum, instant screens not accepted)
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved exemption required (no declinations accepted without exemption)

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Pharmacology Exam, Point of Care Testing, Airborne Precaution Mask Fitting at orientation (not pass/fail)
  • Basic Knowledge Assessment Tool (BKAT) for RNs working in Tele/Step-Down, Progressive Care, ICU (peds and adults)
  • Completion of assigned learning modules during orientation week (approx. 6 hours)
  • Must bring mask (cloth acceptable), non-wireless headphones, and laptop or cell phone to orientation (notify if not available)

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must provide proof of primary residence matching compact licensure for Virginia
  • Fingerprinting and CPS (Central Registry) documentation are time-sensitive and must be completed promptly
  • Candidates can start with pending results for fingerprinting and CPS if proof of submission is on file
  • No onsite certification renewals; renewals must be scheduled prior to contract start
  • Performance evaluations will be completed at the end of the assignment, not required prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with travel nursing background who meet strict credentialing and compliance requirements.
