Job Details

  • Unit Description:
    • Blended unit with Medical-Surgical (MS) nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6
    • PCU nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4
  • Electronic Medical Record System: Epic required

Required Credentials & Certifications

  • Licensure:
    • Permanent Virginia RN license required (no temporary licenses accepted)
    • Nursys verification required for all RNs
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (AHA only)
    • BLS (AHA only)
    • Other certifications may be required based on unit job description (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)
    • Certifications expiring within 1 month of contract start are not accepted
    • No onsite renewals; must be scheduled prior to start
  • Competencies:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (as applicable)
    • Color Blind Testing (required)
    • Abuse Reporting Competency (covering physical/sexual abuse, domestic violence, neglect/exploitation)
  • Health Requirements:
    • Physical exam within 1 year confirming ability to meet job demands
    • Tdap vaccine required (declination accepted with handwritten signature)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per protocol (Q-gold/T-spot or two PPDs)
    • Annual TB questionnaire
    • Titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella with booster if low titer
    • Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Drug screening within 60 days of start (9-panel minimum, instant screens not accepted)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required for 2025-26 season
  • Background Checks:
    • Criminal background check within 60 days of start covering all states lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Statewide and nationwide repositories, sex offender registry, FACIS Level 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
    • Education verification (degree from NLN or CCNE accredited program)
    • Fingerprinting per Virginia State Police requirements (specific units and pediatric areas)
  • Other Documentation:
    • I9 verification
    • Government-issued photo ID carried during work hours
    • Residency declaration matching compact licensure
    • References: 2 required
    • Complete application/resume required
    • Skills checklist updated annually

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Orientation includes:
    • Pharmacology exam, Point of Care Testing, Airborne Precaution Mask Fitting (not pass/fail)
    • Basic Knowledge Assessment Tool (BKAT) for Tele/Step-Down, Progressive Care, ICU units
  • Completion of assigned learning modules (~6 hours) during orientation week required
  • Candidates must bring:
    • Mask (cloth acceptable)
    • Non-wireless headphones
    • Laptop or cell phone (notify if not available)

Important Notes

  • Locals allowed at the same rate as travelers
  • No onsite certification renewals; all must be current before start
  • Fingerprinting and CPS (Central Registry) documentation are time-sensitive and must be completed promptly
  • Flu vaccine declinations are not accepted without agency exemption forms
  • Performance evaluations will be completed at the end of the assignment, not prior to start

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity acute surgery PCU unit within a Level 1 facility, requiring strong clinical skills, current certifications, and compliance with comprehensive background and health screening protocols.
