Labor and Delivery RN Travel Assignment - Twin Falls, Idaho

Assignment Details

  • Location: Twin Falls, Idaho
  • Contract Length: 18 weeks (interpreted from 18)
  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
  • Schedule:
    • Shift times: 7 AM - 7 PM
    • Weekend requirements: Every other weekend (EOW)
      • Day shifts: Saturday & Sunday
      • Night shifts: Friday & Saturday
    • Holiday rotation participation may be required
    • Maximum 5 shifts in a row per policy
    • Schedule made 6 weeks in advance; block scheduling considered but not guaranteed
  • Floating: Primarily between Labor & Delivery (L&D) and Postpartum/Mother-Baby (PP/MB) units; may float hospital-wide for sitter shifts (travelers typically first to float)

Unit Overview

  • Beds and Rooms:
    • 11 L&D rooms (also used as triage rooms)
    • 2 C-Section OR suites on the floor
    • 2 PACU recovery bays on the floor
    • 2 designated triage rooms (4-5 triage patients/day who go home)
    • 17 Postpartum beds
  • Patient Volume:
    • Average 5-6 deliveries per day
    • 150-180 deliveries per month
  • Level of Care: Level 3 NICU supporting babies 30+ weeks gestation (babies under 30 weeks stabilized and transferred out)

Staffing and Ratios

  • Follow AWHONN staffing guidelines:
    • 1:1 for Intrapartum
    • 1:1 to 1:3 for Antepartum
    • 1:3 to 1:4 for Postpartum/Mother-Baby
  • Charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless necessary
  • Resource nurse available to assist with triage, deliveries, and staff support
  • Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager provide coverage on both shifts, on-call as needed
  • Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) available 24/7
  • CNAs on PP/MB unit assist with vitals, baths, ADLs, blood glucose, and other tasks
  • Telemetry technicians on unit; RNs expected to identify rhythm changes but not interpret strips

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification (or NCC Certified in Fetal Monitoring)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience plus some postpartum experience
  • Comfortable working in both L&D and Postpartum units
  • Ability to work with high-risk patients
  • Ability to circulate in C-sections
  • Travelers with only Critical Access Hospital experience will NOT be accepted
  • First-time travelers are accepted
  • Preference for candidates with experience in similar-sized L&D and PP/MB departments
  • Preference for Epic electronic medical record experience (candidates should specify last use)

Clinical Skills and Responsibilities

  • RNs are required to titrate drips including:
    • Pitocin
    • Magnesium sulfate
    • Insulin (experience preferred but training available)
  • Providers have strong collaborative relationships with nursing staff
  • RNs will float freely between L&D and PP/MB depending on staffing and census

Onsite Support

  • OB physicians in-house during weekdays, on-call nights
  • Neonatologist onsite during the day, Neonatal APP coverage at night
  • CRNA anesthesia coverage 24/7 for OB
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 for respiratory treatments and equipment management

Equipment and Systems

  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) systems: EPIC-Care Provider Network (CPN), GE Connect
  • Telemetry monitors with tech support; RNs identify rhythm changes but do not interpret strips

Orientation and Dress Code

  • 3-day orientation with preceptor in both L&D and PP/MB units
  • Dress code:
    • RNs wear navy blue scrubs
    • CNAs wear maroon scrubs

  • Located in Southern Idaho, ideal for those who enjoy nature and outdoor adventures
  • Travelers are expected to be flexible and assist with staffing gaps
  • Night shifts typically scheduled 3 times per week (3x12)
