Registered Nurse - Clinical Specialist (L&D, Mother/Baby, NICU Level 3)
Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Clinical Specialist covering Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby, and NICU Level 3 units.
- Shift: Monday to Friday, 40 hours weekly. Weekend work only for emergencies.
- Role includes clinical expertise, education, collaboration, consultation, leadership, and research focused on complex patient care issues.
- Must have DC nursing license in hand.
- Minimum 2 years of educator experience required.
- Required certifications: ACLS, BLS, BSN.
- EMR system used: Cerner.
- Required skills: Inpatient Acute Care, Women’s Services, effective teaching and presentation skills. NICU experience preferred.
- Facility requires annual flu vaccination (or approved exemption).
- May come into contact with COVID-19 patients.
Required Certifications & Competencies
Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support, AHA or ARC)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) as required by unit
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - C-EFM required for L&D; AWHONN acceptable as placeholder with registration for C-EFM course
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in ED or Pediatrics (not required for ED only)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) as required by unit
- State nursing license verification prior to start
- National tech certification verification as applicable
Competency Exams:
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (must score 80% or higher within 3 years)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with specific scoring requirements and remediation process (required for critical care and specialty units)
- Color Blind Testing (online or in-person)
- Med Surg/Telemetry competency exam if applicable
Health & Safety Requirements
- Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease.
- N95 Fit Test within 9 months of start, updated annually (client may complete onsite if needed).
- Immunizations and documentation required:
- Flu vaccine (or approved medical/religious exemption) for current flu season
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years preferred
- Negative TB test (IGRA or PPD) within 1 year, updated annually; chest x-ray if history of positive TB
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - documentation of 2 vaccines or positive titer required
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or signed declination
- Varicella - documentation of 2 vaccines or positive titer required
- Drug screen within 90 days of start, includes multiple substances (excluding marijuana), must be updated annually.
Background & Documentation
- Criminal background check within 90 days of start covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks prior to and during assignment.
- Education verification of highest degree required by position.
- Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years.
- Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education, employment, licenses, and contact information.
- Skills checklist required prior to start and updated annually.
- I9 and E-Verify attestation required upon hire.
- Valid driver’s license required if driving is an essential job function.
Additional Notes
- Facility requires completion of mandatory modules (SITELS) prior to start date.
- Clear photo for badge required (face centered, no shadows or glare, solid background).
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgment required.
- Facility has strict guidelines for flu vaccine exemptions; exemptions are rarely approved.
This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with strong clinical expertise in women’s health and neonatal care, who is comfortable in a teaching and leadership role within a high-acuity hospital setting.
