Registered Nurse - PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)

Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work at a major hospital PICU unit with rotating day/night shifts (7pm-7:30am / 7am-7:30pm). Shifts may vary to meet hospital operational needs.
  • Must have at least 18 months of permanent experience in the specialty prior to travel assignments.
  • Must have 18 months of recent pediatric experience (travel experience accepted).
  • Experience with epilepsy monitoring and specialized care for patients up to 25 years old.
  • Must hold a permanent Ohio nursing license or a compact state license.
  • Required certifications: AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS. Experience with EKGs and inotropes required; NIHSS preferred.
  • Must work at least every other holiday.
  • Pass ECG rhythm recognition test and SafeMedicate test during orientation.

  • State Nursing License Verification (Ohio or compact state)
  • NURSYS Verification
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (as applicable)
  • Unit-Specific Competency Exam (updated annually)
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (annual)
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) during orientation
  • NIH Stroke Certification preferred but not required

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 18 months permanent experience in pediatric nursing specialty.
  • Experience with epilepsy monitoring and care for patients up to 25 years old.
  • Ability to recognize ECG rhythms and administer inotropes.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts and holidays as required.

Licensure & Background Requirements

  • Permanent Ohio nursing license or compact state license required before start.
  • Background check required prior to assignment start and must be updated annually or after breaks in service of 2+ months.
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 48 hours of contract signing, results valid for 12 months and must be updated annually.
  • Fingerprinting must be completed under nursing code 4723.09.
  • Candidates may start with fingerprint results pending but must complete prior to extension.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including Snellen eye exam (for candidates signing after 4/11/2025).
  • Fit mask test (N95) within 12 months, updated annually.
  • Immunizations required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months, updated annually
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer with booster if needed
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
    • Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer with booster if needed
    • Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season (10/31 - 03/31)
  • Drug screening: Standard 10-panel drug screen within 12 months, updated annually (instant tests not accepted).

Orientation & Training

  • Completion of online training modules prior to start is mandatory. Modules must be completed on a computer using Google Chrome and cannot be skipped.
  • SafeMedicate preparation materials provided; pass/fail testing during orientation.
  • Must complete ECG rhythm recognition and medication competency tests during orientation.
  • Must complete all onboarding modules before clearance to start.

Additional Requirements

  • Must provide 2 professional references from employment within the past year (manager, supervisor, charge nurse, or director).
  • Employment application must include 3 years of prior work history with at least 2 years in acute care and similar specialty.
  • Skills checklist required annually.
