Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum)

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) care in an acute care hospital setting. The nurse will provide comprehensive care across antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care, including support for vaginal births, C-sections, and gynecological post-op care.


Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery
  • Years of Experience Required: 3 years (Community Hospital experience preferred)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required
  • First-timers Accepted: No

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Weekend rotation: 4-6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays per 6-week schedule
  • Holiday shifts: 1 major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) and 1-2 minor holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day)
  • On-call: 2 mandatory on-call shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Floating: RN expected to care for any patient assignment within the LDRP unit, including triage, C-section cases (including circulating), antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care
  • Full couplet care required (mother and baby)
  • No block scheduling accommodations
  • Local candidates not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Preferred: AWHONN Advanced or Intermediate certifications

Skills & Competencies Required

Clinical Skills

  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood administration, venous blood draws, peripheral IV start and maintenance, infusion pumps/drips
  • Labor & Delivery Management: Amnioinfusion, assist vaginal delivery, circulate for C-section, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock management, C-section recovery, sterile vaginal exams
  • Medication Administration: Antihypertensives, Magnesium Sulfate, Pitocin (oxytocin), Prostaglandins, Terbutaline
  • Neonatal Care: Cord blood collection, infant ID/security banding, circumcision assistance and care, car seat education, metabolic screening, newborn assessment, hypoglycemia management, phototherapy, thermoregulation
  • Antepartum Care: NST (Non-Stress Tests), reflex checks, edema assessment, clonus, triage of obstetrical patients, use of external fetal monitoring (EFM)
  • Postpartum Care: Baby-friendly protocols, breastfeeding/lactation support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion, fundus/lochia/perineum care, breast pump use, wound assessment, bladder distension, postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, vaginal delivery care
  • Surgical Procedures: D&C, tubal ligation, post-op gynecology (hysterectomy) care
  • Pain Management: Epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, opioids, pain assessment, PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) use
  • Fetal Monitoring: Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, spiral electrode placement, internal fetal monitoring, intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) placement and calibration
  • Additional Preferred Skills: Assist with high-risk deliveries, scrub for C-section, anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, APGAR scoring, neonatal resuscitation, radiant warmers, sterile speculum exams, cervical cerclage, infant/neonatal arrest response, rapid response team participation

Background Checks & Verifications

  • Criminal background check (7-year search, statewide and nationwide as applicable)
  • Education verification (highest nursing education)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (quarterly)
  • State-specific searches and registries as required
  • Fingerprinting required for certain Illinois assignments
  • Professional license primary source verification (Missouri licenses via NURSYS)

Health & Safety Documents

  • Physical exam within 1 year
  • Fit mask testing (N95) with annual renewal
  • Immunizations and titers: Tdap, Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (with boosters or declination as applicable)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
  • Drug testing within 1 year, including specific drug panels
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season

Facility-Specific Documents

  • HIPAA Acknowledgement (annual)
  • Latex Allergy Questionnaire (annual)
  • Confidentiality Form (annual)
  • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual, via WorkRamp)
  • Hand Hygiene, Fingernail, Dress Code Policies (review and sign prior to start)
  • Orientation Modules (required for all RNs, approx. 16 hours, completed prior to start)
  • Badge photo and facility badge required

References & History

  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year of start
  • Employment application required

This position is ideal for a skilled Labor & Delivery RN with at least 3 years of experience, comfortable with a fast-paced acute care environment, and capable of providing comprehensive mother-baby care across the LDRP spectrum. The role requires flexibility for weekend, holiday, and on-call shifts, and adherence to strict compliance and credentialing standards.
