Job Opportunity: Med Surg / Ortho RN (5 North Unit)

Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Facility & Unit Overview

  • Level 1 Academic Medical Center
  • Unit: 5 North Med Surg Ortho
  • Unit Beds: 31
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6; adjusted lower for higher acuity patients
  • Patient Types: Orthopedic patients, postop total joint replacements, general med-surg overflow
  • Telemetry: All units have tele monitoring; central monitor stations communicate with RNs

Shift & Scheduling

  • Shift Length: 12 hours (7a-7p or 7p-7a)
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling possible as needs allow; travelers expected to fill schedule gaps
  • Weekend Requirement: Typically every other weekend or 2 weekends per month; may be higher based on department needs
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotate with regular staff
  • Call/Standby: None
  • Floating: Staff float between all med-surg units within skillset; higher acuity patients assigned to core staff

Required Experience & Skills

  • Specialty: Med Surg / Ortho nursing
  • Minimum Years of Experience: Level 1 trauma experience required (experience at a larger facility with high surgery volume and high acuity patients)
  • Must be comfortable managing lines and chest tubes
  • RNs may titrate heparin drips; amiodarone may be started before transfer to cardiac unit
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Certifications & Training

  • Required: BLS
  • Charge Nurses: ACLS required
  • Orientation:
    • First day includes paperwork, system logins (Omnicell, Epic), unit tour, scheduling discussion
    • Followed by 2 additional shifts with a preceptor (including 12-hour night shifts)

Additional Information

  • Nurse Manager and Educator available during business hours; adult house supervisor on evenings and weekends
  • Charge nurse takes light patient assignment, full load if needed
  • Nurse aides available on all units
  • Respiratory Therapy support available for CPAP, BiPAP at night; high flow oxygen on other units
  • Dress Code: Solid color, professional scrubs (any color)

This position is ideal for an RN experienced in fast-paced orthopedic and medical-surgical environments, comfortable with high acuity patients and trauma care.
