Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (MS Neuro RN)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse, MS Neuro (Multiple Sclerosis Neurology)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: 4-5 weekend shifts per 4-week period plus holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratio: 1:5
  • On-call: Not applicable
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities

Unit Description

  • 23-bed inpatient General Neurology/Medical Stroke/Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
  • Adult and geriatric patients
  • Private patient rooms, including a reverse airflow room
  • Nine rooms equipped for continuous epilepsy monitoring
  • Manages patients with Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, seizures, and medically managed strokes
  • Supports Comprehensive Spine Center and Comprehensive Epilepsy Center programs
  • Provides overflow care for neurosurgical patients and spine surgeries

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • Licenses: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Certifications Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification

Important Notes

  • First-time travelers are accepted
  • During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams
  • Floating between units is expected to meet facility needs

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, statewide and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
  • Education Verification: Required (diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder)
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; SC RN license processing times vary (3-5 weeks for permanent, 24-48 hours for temporary walk-through)
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
    • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
    • Immunizations and titers: Tdap (within 10 years), Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer or vaccines with boosters if needed), Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • Annual TB questionnaire
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug-April)
    • COVID vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete facility declination form
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment History: Complete application/resume with all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire

Additional Certifications & Training (If Applicable)

  • ACLS: Required for adult critical care and certain units
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for ER and preferred for neurology units
  • BLS: Required for all clinical staff
  • Other certifications (PALS, TNCC, CHEMO, EFM) as applicable based on unit assignment

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Completion of orientation modules and OurDay platform training required before start
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccination documentation into OurDay platform
  • First Day Instructions (FDI) will be provided after clearance
  • Badge photo must be submitted by Wednesday end of day prior to start

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neurology unit with a supportive team and comprehensive patient care programs. Candidates should be prepared for floating duties and emergency response assignments during hurricane season.
