Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Specialty: Registered Nurse (ICU/PCU)
Contract Length: 52 weeks (up to 1 year by request)
Start Date: ASAP preferred


Job Details

  • Schedule: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • Holiday shifts required (no Christmas time off approved)
  • Must be comfortable working all ICU and PCU units
  • Staffing office may float nurses to any ICU or PCU unit every 4 hours
  • Patient Ratios:
    • ICU: 2:1
    • PCU: 5:1
  • EPIC experience required
  • Large Level 1/Level 2 ICU experience required

Experience Requirements

  • Years of Specialty Experience: Large L1/L2 ICU experience required (implies advanced critical care experience; no explicit years stated, assume at least 2+ years ICU experience)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (PALS, NRP, TNCC) - check unit-specific requirements

Licensure & Verification

  • Valid RN license with primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start
  • Residency Declaration Form required if working on a compact license

Background & Compliance

  • 7-year background check required within 1 year of start (must cover all locations lived/worked in past 7 years)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • Drug screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant acceptable)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually (not required for students)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season

Additional Requirements

  • 2 clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Complete application/resume required
  • Annual skills checklist update required
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required (HIPAA compliance)
  • Carilion-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements must be completed within 48 hours of signing
  • Local traveler eligibility based on driver's license address radius:
    • 100 miles: eligible for full contract and extensions

    • 50-99.9 miles: eligible for one 13-week assignment, no extension
    • <50 miles: eligible for one 13-week assignment, no extension, local pay rate applies

Notes

  • Candidates must be flexible and able to float between ICU and PCU units frequently
  • Christmas time off requests will not be approved
  • Large hospital system with frequent staffing needs and dynamic unit assignments

This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity patients and flexible scheduling in a Level 1/Level 2 trauma center environment.
