Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (ED)
Location: Utica, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a brand new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department at a Level 3 trauma center with a 68-bed unit including super track, psych, trauma, pediatrics, and comprehensive stroke and regional cardiac centers.
- High acuity unit with patient ratios striving for 1:4 or 1:5, subject to change based on staffing and census.
- All private rooms with occasional hallway beds.
Requirements
- License: Valid New York RN license.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years in specialty (Emergency Nursing) and prior travel experience required.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- TNCC or ATCN (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - required for ER staff
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Epic electronic health record experience required
- Preferred: Pediatric experience.
- Schedule: Every other weekend; no guaranteed block schedule.
Orientation
- Half-day clinical orientation.
- Half-day shadowing on unit with nurse.
Support Staff on Unit
- Patient Care Technician (1 per pod)
- First-look RN
- Triage RN
- Charge RN
- Secretary
- Respiratory Therapist, Lab (occasionally), Critical Response RN
Skills & Competencies
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 80% or meet Angoff score).
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for ICU, PCU, ER, CT ICU, and 7th Floor M/S Unit; expires every 3 years).
- Color Blind Testing (required prior to start).
- Harassment Prevention Training (New York state requirement).
Clinical Skills & Procedures
- Experience with drips including TNK, Cleviprex, and Level 1 infusion for Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP).
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Fit mask test within 1 year and updated annually (N95 or equivalent).
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (PPD, Quantiferon Gold acceptable; Tspot not accepted).
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
- Varicella (titer, vaccine, or history of chickenpox)
- 9 Panel Drug Screen within 30 days of start.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (Sept 1 - Mar 31).
- Pneumonia vaccination or declination required.
Documentation & Compliance
- Government-issued photo ID.
- Emergency contact form prior to start.
- Background checks including 7-year search, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, education verification.
- Facility-specific documents including photo for badge, job description acknowledgment, online learning modules completion prior to first shift, and various facility forms.
- References: 2 professional references for travel/allied/per diem acute care within 3 years of start.
Additional Notes
- Locals accepted at a local bill rate.
- Parking available at no charge.
- Due to high patient volume, ED ratios may fluctuate.
This position is ideal for experienced Emergency Department RNs with prior travel experience who are comfortable working in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment with a variety of patient populations including pediatrics and trauma.
