Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Specialty: Registered Nurse (ICU Float Pool)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float between 2 campuses (Yale New Haven Hospital and Saint Raphael campus) within the ICU Float Pool.
  • Float to 5 ICU specialties and step-down units, including pulmonary step-down with a 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • No on-call required.
  • Must float within scope to meet facility needs.
  • Pending license accepted but must be active prior to start date.
  • Guaranteed hours.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Shuttle service available between campuses.

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years of ICU nursing experience (highest required years of experience).
  • Certifications required before start:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all RNs except certain specialties)
  • Other certifications to check based on unit assignment:
    • PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, CPI, EFM, and others as applicable.

Licensure & Background Checks

  • Active state nursing license required prior to start.
  • Background checks required:
    • 7-year criminal background check (updated annually)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification required, including foreign equivalency for internationally educated nurses.
  • Primary source verification of license within 30 days of start.

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (must score 85%).
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024, must score 80%).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ICU and telemetry units.
  • EPIC testing or training required for RNs with EPIC experience.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (3M N95 preferred).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (MMR vaccines or titers)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella (titer, vaccines, or physician documented history)
    • Tdap vaccination preferred for certain specialties.
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • COVID vaccine series preferred.

    • Stroke Education
    • CLABSI Prevention
    • Preventing Pressure Injury
    • Language Services
    • CAUTI Education
    • Patient Transportation with Oxygen
    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability
    • Patient Bedside Rounding
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • AME Blood Administration (annual update required)
    • New Employee Orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module
    • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs)
    • eCart Training Module
    • Chaperone Policy Training
  • Compliance with all required facility-specific documents and attestations is mandatory.

Additional Requirements

  • Must provide a 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days.
  • Work history verification required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024.
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech and specialty roles (not RN-specific but may apply if cross-trained).

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required for this position.
  • RTO (Return to Office) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval.
  • Block scheduling is not accommodated.

This position offers a dynamic ICU float role with exposure to multiple specialties and campuses, ideal for RNs with ICU experience seeking a travel contract in Connecticut.
