Registered Nurse (Pediatric StepDown) - Washington, DC
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Pediatric StepDown Registered Nurse with 2+ years of nursing experience (higher end of 1-2 years stated). Pediatric experience is preferred but first-time travelers are accepted.
Key Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 2 years nursing experience (pediatric experience preferred)
- Certifications Required:
- BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - required based on unit/specialty
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - required based on unit/specialty
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) - required based on unit/specialty
- Chemotherapy certification - required based on unit/specialty
- State RN License (must have or show proof of pending DC RN license prior to start)
- NURSYS Verification (RN, LPN/LVN, AP)
- Preferred Certifications: CPN or pediatric rehab certification
- Other Requirements:
- Strong assessment and communication skills
- Comfortable supervising CNAs, LPNs, PCAs as needed
- Experience with medically complex pediatric patients preferred
- Floating within scope to similar pediatric rehab/inpatient/SNF units
- Occasional weekend shifts (facility dependent)
- Block scheduling available upon request (not guaranteed)
- Locals and candidates with pending licenses accepted (pending license must be approved before start)
- No on-call required
Work Environment
- Pediatric rehabilitation and specialized inpatient care
- Medically complex pediatric patients in inpatient and skilled nursing settings
- Typical pediatric inpatient/SNF nurse-to-patient ratios (varies by census)
- Charting system: Cerner
- Scrub color: Any child-friendly color, no logos
- Guaranteed 36 hours per week
- Max 1 week of RTO (request time off); if full week taken, must extend contract to make up time
Orientation & Onboarding
- 20+ hours of non-billable onboarding modules required
- Pass/fail medication calculation exam at orientation (must score 84% or higher, 2 attempts allowed)
- Facility-specific training modules including COVID-19 vaccine training and pediatric care modules
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License/State ID)
- Background checks within 30 days of start (including SSN trace, education verification, sex offender registry, etc.)
- Education verification (transcript/diploma accepted if pending)
- Physical exam within 30 days of start (must include latex allergy info)
- Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year of start
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tdap (within 10 years)
- MMR (2 vaccines or positive quantitative titer)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive quantitative titer)
- Hepatitis B series and quantitative titer or declination form
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption (seasonal)
- COVID vaccine or declination for tracking
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 60 days of start (with additional requirements if positive or new converter)
- 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (must include marijuana)
- Required facility-specific documents such as photo for badge, emergency contact, and acknowledgment of safety manuals and pass/fail testing
References & History
- Two professional references dated within the past two years (preferably supervisors/managers) required
- Employment application and skills checklist required
Prior Travel Experience
- No explicit prior travel experience required; first-time travelers accepted
This position is ideal for a pediatric RN with experience or interest in medically complex pediatric patients, comfortable working in a specialized inpatient rehab/skilled nursing environment, and willing to complete thorough onboarding and compliance requirements.
