Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Newport News, Virginia
Specialty: Registered Nurse (Critical Care Float Pool)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float pool position covering Critical Care Units: Surgical ICU (SICU), Medical ICU (MICU), Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), and Oncology ICU (OICU).
  • Units include three 18-bed ICUs and one 6-bed Oncology ICU.
  • Patient populations: traumatic injuries, surgical complications, neuro patients, open-heart surgery, critically ill medical comorbidities, cardiac procedure monitoring, oncology patients requiring chemo inductions, DKA, alcohol withdrawal, and other high-acuity patients.
  • Flexible scheduling preferred.
  • Every other weekend required, including Saturday and Sunday.
  • Holiday shifts may be required during the assignment.

Required Experience

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse in critical care.

  • Driver’s license required if applicable (especially for Home Health & Hospice roles).
  • Background check: 7-year criminal history check within one year of start, updated annually.
  • Fingerprinting: Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check required starting 7/15/2025 (for tracking).
  • Physical exam within last 12 months required.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility policy.
  • Drug screening within last 12 months required.
  • Immunizations:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; exemptions require approval.
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or declination accepted.
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines, titer, or history of chickenpox; exemptions require approval.
    • Flu vaccination required during flu season (10/1-3/31) with strict deadlines; medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval.
    • COVID vaccination preferred (initial series).

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required.
  • Application/resume required.
  • Annual skills checklist update required.
  • Medication and competency exams must be completed within one year of start date.
  • Photo for badge must meet facility specifications and be submitted 5 days prior to start.
