Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Kansas City, Missouri

Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN) – Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with Renal focus
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Shift Requirements:
    • Weekend shifts required: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (combination of Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
    • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed
    • Floating within scope to other departments, units, and facilities may be required
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 1:5; may flex to 1:6 occasionally, with travelers expected to take extra patients
  • Block Scheduling: Not accommodated
  • Locals: Not accepted (home address must be at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: Minimum 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Experience & Skills Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years (based on renal transplant, PD catheter, hemodialysis, drains, TPN, wound care, diabetes encephalopathy, acute renal rejection, thymoglobulin administration)

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care, PD catheters
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response: Dysrhythmia interpretation and management, telemetry monitoring, rapid response team use
  • Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Accessing ports, blood product administration, central line and peripheral line care, PICC line management, starting IVs
  • Medications: Heparin protocols, PCA
  • Respiratory: Nasal cannula, oxygen face masks
  • Professional Topics: Isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac
  • Certifications Required: BLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Skills Preferred: Neurological/Psychiatric (CVA), surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), tracheostomy management, thymoglobulin titration

Certifications & Compliance Requirements

  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
  • Licensing:
    • Valid Missouri RN license (Primary source verification required via NURSYS)
    • No pending licenses accepted
  • Background Checks:
    • Criminal background check within 6 months of start (including statewide, nationwide, and international if applicable)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks
    • State-specific searches (Missouri EDL, Highway Patrol, Family Care Safety Registry)
  • Health Requirements:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start
    • Fit mask testing (N95) annually
    • Immunizations and titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tdap (or declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Drug testing within 1 year, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Competency Exams:
    • Medication/pharmacology competency exam
    • Unit-specific competency exam (updated annually)
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 12 months of start (80% pass rate required)

  • On-call: Not required
  • Dialysis: Hemodialysis is not required to be performed by unit RNs due to contracted dialysis process
  • Transplant Patients: 2:1 patient ratio for first 48 hours post-transplant
