Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - ICU

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Unit: ICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit)
  • Beds: 11
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2 on all shifts
  • Floating: May float to Medical-Surgical-Intermediate (MSI) units, Emergency Department (ED) for inpatient holds, or other departments as needed within scope
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (combination of Friday/Saturday/Sunday)
  • Holiday Requirement: Yes, if holiday falls on scheduled days
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Locals: Not accepted (home address must be at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - ICU
  • Required Years of Experience: 2 years

  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Preferred: Experience with Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)

  • Chronic/Acute Renal failure management
  • CVVHD/CRRT
  • Accessing ports
  • Arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care/management
  • Starting IVs
  • Continuous IV sedation and procedural sedation administration
  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • CVA/Acute Stroke management
  • Hypothermia protocol/Arctic Sun
  • Assist with BiPAP and CPAP management
  • Assist with chest tube insertion/removal
  • Care of ventilated patients, including ventilator management and suctioning (ETT, NT)
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Infection prevention and isolation precautions (use of PPE)
  • Phlebotomy
  • Surgical wounds with drains/Wound Vac care

Facility & Documentation Requirements

  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Scrub color: Navy blue for RNs
  • Government-issued ID required
  • Background checks required, including:
    • Criminal background check (7-year search, statewide and nationwide as applicable)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks
    • Education verification (highest nursing education)
    • State-specific searches and registries as applicable
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including multiple substances, must remain valid throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination
    • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (09/30 - 04/01)
  • Facility-specific documents required prior to start, including:
    • HIPAA Acknowledgement
    • Latex Allergy Questionnaire
    • Confidentiality Form
    • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual, via WorkRamp)
    • Hand Hygiene, Fingernail, and Dress Code Policies
    • Orientation Modules (approx. 16 hours, required for all RNs)
  • Competency exams required:
    • Unit-specific competency exam (annual)
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (within 12 months)
    • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam
    • Color blindness testing within 12 months

References & History

  • Two professional references required (supervisors within last year preferred)
  • Employment application required
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start

This position is ideal for experienced ICU Registered Nurses with at least 2 years of critical care experience, who are comfortable with a variety of advanced ICU skills and procedures, and who meet the certification and compliance requirements listed above. Prior travel experience is not required, but first-time travelers are not accepted for this role.
