Registered Nurse (RN) - Travel/Contract
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Facility: Pediatric ICU at a nationally recognized children's hospital
Job Details
- Shift: 12-hour shifts, rotating every 3 weeks between day (7:00am-7:30pm) and night (7:00pm-7:30am) shifts
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, every other weekend, some holidays required
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a high acuity hospital setting (for first-time travelers)
- Strong Pediatric ICU experience required
- At least 1 year of cardiovascular (CV) experience required
- Must have completed 2 years of acute care experience within the last 3 years
- Candidates with strong Level II experience may be considered
- Prior travel experience is NOT required (1st time travelers allowed)
Licensure & Certifications
- Wisconsin Registered Nurse license or compact license from permanent address state
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) only
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification through AHA
- EPIC experience required (preferably within the past 12 months)
- Telemetry: Basic Arrhythmia experience required; must pass Telemetry test prior to start
Education
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred
Job Responsibilities
- Provide family-centered care to critically ill or injured pediatric patients in a 21-bed unit
- Care for patients with a variety of medical and surgical problems including:
- Acute head injuries
- Critical neurological disorders
- Pulmonary diseases
- Cardiac anomalies
- Organ transplantation
- Multi-system organ failure
- ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
Facility & Work Environment
- Magnet®-designated pediatric medical and surgical center
- Level One Pediatric Trauma Center and Level IV NICU
- Floating required: may be assigned to multiple units or locations based on staffing needs
- Candidate’s permanent address must be within 50 miles of the primary work site
Testing & Compliance Requirements
- Must pass Pediatric Telemetry Test (WorkRamp LMS) prior to start and annually thereafter
- Pass/Fail testing required for EKG/Medication and Telemetry competency
- Background checks including caregiver screening, education verification, and state-specific searches required
- Drug screening required per standard clinical guidelines
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccination (proof of one dose from adulthood)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers, with medical/religious exemptions accepted
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer, with exemptions accepted
- Hepatitis B vaccination series or declination form
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required annually
- Other vaccines as applicable (e.g., Meningococcal for certain departments)
Additional Notes
- Must complete facility-specific forms such as caregiver screening and communicable disease forms within 90 days of start
- Orientation includes safety manual acknowledgment and competency exams
- Parking permit required if parking onsite; alternative transportation options available
This position offers an opportunity to work in a highly specialized pediatric critical care environment with a multidisciplinary team, providing advanced care to some of the most vulnerable patients.
