Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Jersey City, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Must work or be on call for 1 of 2 or 2 of 3 holidays per unit requirements.
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday), on call twice a week and every third weekend.
  • Must be able to circulate; scrub experience preferred but not required.
  • Types of cases: Adult open heart/general cases when no hearts.
  • Experience required in Main OR, Ortho, vascular, general, thoracic, neuro.
  • Charting system: EPIC.
  • Scrubs provided.
  • First-time travelers accepted.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 1.5+ years of current acute care OR relevant experience required.
  • Experience in circulating required; scrub experience preferred but not mandatory.

Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): Required for all RNs.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Preferred.
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, EFM) – confirm with program coordinator.
  • State nursing license required and must match legal name on documentation.
  • NURSYS verification required as applicable.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history.
  • 2 references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
  • Skills checklist for scrub and circulate skills must be submitted and updated annually.
  • Background check required within 30 days of start, including criminal, alias, and statewide searches.
  • Drug screen required within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen).
  • Physical exam within the last 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes.
  • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
  • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start.
  • Color blindness test required if job tasks require color discrimination.
  • Various competency exams (medication test, dysrhythmia/EKG, pass/fail testing) required within 72 hours of signing and within 12 months of start.
  • Annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation required.

Additional Notes

  • Must submit all required documentation timely; scheduling accommodations for time off (RTO) must be noted upon submission.
  • Candidates switching between RWJ sites with less than 30-day gap may reuse some documentation if within required timeframes.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs, with online and in-person components.
  • Various CEUs (Continuing Education Units) required depending on specialty and unit, including Med Surg, Stroke, Trauma, and others.
  • Facility-specific policies and attestations (e.g., floating policy, medication storage procedures) must be reviewed and signed prior to start.

Prior Travel Experience

  • First-time travelers accepted; prior travel experience is not required.

This position offers a structured schedule with a focus on acute care and operating room experience, requiring strong clinical skills in circulating and familiarity with EPIC charting. Compliance with extensive documentation, certifications, and competency testing is mandatory.
