Registered Nurse (Med Surg) - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Camden, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Nights, 7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:6
  • Unit Beds: 54
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: No
  • Holiday Coverage: As needed
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2+ years in Medical-Surgical nursing
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-timers accepted)
  • Licenses: South Carolina RN license or Compact license must be active and in hand prior to start
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Preferred Skills:
    • IV start skills required
    • Telemetry and management of cardiac drips preferred

Facility & Work Environment

  • Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital
  • Total Staffed Beds: 119
  • Charting System: Epic
  • Parking: Free in unrestricted areas
  • Hurricane Season: June through November; staff may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time

Scheduling & Hours

  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Block Scheduling: Approval can be requested but not guaranteed
  • Local Candidates: Accepted on a case-by-case basis

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Must be completed within 90 days of start
    • Includes SSN trace, statewide and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
  • Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if verification pending
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; must be active, unencumbered, and no pending actions
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • References: Minimum 2 clinical references, including at least one from the unit of assignment
  • Employment History: Last 3 clinical employers verified; attestation letters accepted only if other verification methods exhausted
  • Physical Exam: Must be current within 90 days of start, attesting ability to meet physical demands without restrictions
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • Immunizations & Health Requirements:
    • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or appropriate follow-up for positives
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titers or vaccination series required
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption; declinations not accepted
    • COVID-19 vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required via RespSafety questionnaire
  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style color photo with solid light background, frontal view, shoulders up

Orientation & Training

  • Modules: Must complete facility-specific orientation modules prior to start; estimated 2-6 hours depending on location
  • Competency Exams: Medication test/pharmacology and other competency exams as applicable
  • Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually for the applicable unit

Additional Notes

  • Floating between units or sister facilities is expected within the scope of practice
  • Facility may accommodate block scheduling upon approval
  • Travelers should be aware of potential emergency assignments during hurricane season
  • All certifications must be valid and not expire within 30 days of assignment start date; renewals or scheduled courses required if expiring soon

This position is suitable for Medical-Surgical RNs with at least 2 years of experience, who hold the appropriate South Carolina or Compact RN license, and possess current BLS and ACLS certifications. Prior travel experience is not required.
