Job Description

  • MS float position (Medical-Surgical/Telemetry float)
  • Locals allowed
  • EPIC system experience required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
  • Stroke education required

Required Experience

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse

Certifications & Training Requirements

  • NIH Stroke Certification required for all inpatient RNs (except OR and PICC); must be updated annually
  • Stroke education CEUs required annually, hours vary by unit (e.g., ICU, Neuro ICU, MICU, Step down = 6 hours; ER, PACU, Interventional = 4 hours; Med Surg, Labor and Delivery = 1 hour)
  • Pass/Fail testing (EKG/Medication) administered during orientation
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required within one year of start date
  • Competency exams as applicable to specialty/profession

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within one year of start, updated annually
  • Fingerprinting via Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check (effective 7/15/2025)
  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Valid and current driver’s license required for Home Health & Hospice positions (not applicable here)
  • Physical exam within last 12 months
  • Drug screen within last 12 months
  • TB screening: Negative TB test or chest X-ray within last 12 months; if positive, clearance letter required
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or documented exemption for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines, titer, or history of chickenpox)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccine required during flu season (10/1-3/31) with strict deadlines; medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval
    • COVID vaccine series preferred

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Photo for badge meeting specific guidelines (recent, professional, neutral background, no hats/headphones, etc.)
  • Completion and signing of confidentiality agreement, scrub color policy, safety brochure, dress code policy, drug-free policy, and hand washing hygiene policy prior to start
  • References: 2 professional references required
  • Employment application/resume required
  • Skills checklist updated annually

Additional Notes

  • Orientation includes computer-based learning (CBL) with multiple attempts allowed for passing required tests
  • Stroke CEUs must be completed via Relias platform
  • NIH Stroke Certificates and stroke education CEUs must be updated annually regardless of certificate expiration dates
  • No prior travel experience explicitly required for this position

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with experience in medical-surgical and telemetry units, comfortable with EPIC, and who holds current ACLS, BLS, and NIH Stroke certifications. Stroke education and competency testing are mandatory, with a contract length of approximately 13 weeks.
