Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Florence, South Carolina
Specialty: Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (MedSurg RN)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: 4 shifts of 12 hours each, Nights (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 1:6; may flex to 1:7 during unplanned absences
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call Requirement: Yes, PRN for low census
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 2 years preferred
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
  • Licenses: South Carolina RN license or Compact license must be in hand prior to start
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Certifications Preferred:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Special Skills Required:
    • Med/Surg, MS/Tele, Telemetry
    • Insulin administration
    • Rapid Response experience
  • Electronic Health Record: Epic experience required

  • Block Scheduling: May be requested but not guaranteed
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Locals: Not accepted
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks

Important Seasonal Note

  • Hurricane Season: June through November (peak in August and September)
    • All employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams during this time
    • New or extended assignments during hurricane season should be carefully considered

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering last 7 years of residence/employment
    • Includes SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification:
    • Diploma or transcripts preferred as placeholder if verification is pending
    • Not required for this facility
  • Licensure Verification:
    • Primary source verification required for SC RN license
    • NURSYS verification required for all RNs
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Performance Evaluation: Must be dated within 12 months of start
  • Work History Verification: Not required for this facility

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual updates required, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days) or chest X-ray if positive
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters if low titer
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters if low titer
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • Flu Vaccination: Required during flu season (August 1 - April 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
  • Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required for all patient-facing travelers

Orientation & Facility Specifics

  • Orientation Modules: Must be completed prior to start; estimated 4 hours for this location
  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo required
  • Acknowledgments & Agreements: Candidates must sign assignment acknowledgment, code of conduct, confidentiality agreements, HR policy manual, systems user agreement, and user access request prior to start
  • Safety & Competency Exams: Medication test/pharmacology competency and other competency exams required as applicable

Additional Notes

  • Radiation Badge: Required only for specific departments (OR, Cath Lab, EP Lab, Radiology); not required for this MedSurg position
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required for this position
  • Locals: Not accepted for this travel assignment

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of MedSurg experience, comfortable working night shifts with weekend and on-call requirements, and willing to float within similar units. The role requires strong clinical skills, Epic experience, and compliance with comprehensive health and background documentation.
