Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float - Registered Nurse

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float to multiple ICUs including Trauma, Oncology, Cardiac/Heart and Vascular, Neurology, Medicine, and COVID units.
  • When ICU needs are low, float to inpatient floors as a staff nurse (ratio no more than 1:3).
  • May be asked to float to non-critical care units or serve as a patient sitter if needed.
  • ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1 for all shifts.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule, plus holiday rotation.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years ICU experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year Cardiac ICU (CV ICU) experience.
  • Past EPIC electronic health record experience strongly preferred.
  • Will not accept first-time travelers (prior travel experience required).

Preferred Skills and Certifications

  • Cardiac skill set preferred but not required:
    • Swan-Ganz catheter hemodynamic interpretation
    • IABP, Impella, ECMO experience
    • Vasoactive drips, CRRT
  • Required certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • Vents, IV start, Telemetry, Conscious Sedation
  • Preferred certifications:
    • Chemo, CCRN, NIH Stroke Certification, ONS, TNCC, CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
    • Triage, ICP monitoring, PA lines, Level 1 Trauma experience

Compliance & Requirements

Licensure & Background

  • Valid Registered Nurse license with primary source verification required.
  • Government-issued ID required.
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches.
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required.
  • State-specific searches and registries as applicable.

Certifications

  • BLS and ACLS (AHA only) required.
  • Other certifications as applicable by unit (e.g., TNCC, CPI, NIH Stroke Certification).
  • IV Certification required for LPNs/LVNs if applicable.
  • MAB or CPI required if applicable.

Health & Immunizations

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually.
  • Tdap vaccine or declination required.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella.
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be current throughout assignment.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.

Facility Specific Documents & Training

  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, recent within 6 months).
  • HIPAA Acknowledgement, Latex Allergy Questionnaire, Confidentiality Form, Regulatory Compliance Education, Hep B Declination, TB Questionnaire, Hand Hygiene Policy, Fingernail Policy, Dress Code Policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start.
  • Completion of facility orientation modules (~16 hours) through WorkRamp required unless completed within the last year or recently worked at the facility.

Competency Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required.
  • Unit-specific competency exams required and must be updated annually.
  • Oncology competency exam required for Med Surg-Oncology unit.

References & History

  • Two professional references required (supervisors within last year preferred).
  • Employment application and unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start.

Additional Notes

  • Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers will not be accepted.
  • Floating assignments require flexibility to work across multiple ICU specialties and inpatient floors.
  • Strong independent nursing skills are essential.

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses with cardiac ICU background and prior travel nursing experience looking for a diverse float role in a short-term acute care setting.
